Yes you can use programs like Partition Magic that allows you to create, resize and merge partitions on your hard drive without destroying data. It can also help organize and protect your data, run multiple operating systems, convert file system types and fix partition table errors.

How to reformat laptop

If you have the recovery cd, you can just pop-in the CD, select the reformat option and the installation process will continue automatically. Some laptop might have a special partition in the drive contains the operating system, drivers, etc. in case you want to reformat your laptop without the CD.

If you don't have the recovery CD, you usually can request one from the manufacturer. Otherwise, if you want to do a clean install, make sure you download all the drivers for your laptop, this may includes: motherboard, chipset, graphic card, sound card, modem, network card. Once you do that, put in the OS CD and start installing.

If you decided to do a clean install without the recovery CD, it would be best to create partition on your harddrive first, so you can have dedicated partition for operating system and backup. The next time you want to reformat your harddrive, you can just reformat that particular partition ex. C:\

    4. Step 4 After the reformatting process finished and you have installed a new clean OS. Install drivers one by one and restart when it's required. Try to do it in order from basic function -> secondary ex. motherboard, chipset, graphic, sound, modem, networking, etc.
    5. Step 5 Install back all programs that you might need. If you already backup the installation programs or have the installation CDs handy, you can do this pretty fast.
    6. Step 6 Rearrange the look and customize your new operating system, refer to the screenshot you have taken earlier before the reformatting process begin if you want to get the same look and feel.

I have an old laptop that partition and hd have been reformatted. I've tried using boot disk but keep getting the message that says, ''save to disk partition not found. So, can't get win98se to load as...

Haven't used win98 for a while so bear with me and this uses DOS COMMANDS too.
If useing restore cd/floppy you have to use a utility from compaq that creates two partitions on hard-drive.
They may have a restore floppy if you need it too.
One for "recovery files" and one for "OS Boot"
AHH, the memories, I still have my 95/98/ME Laptops up and running for older stuff. HP n CQ too.
Restore CD should do it all though.
If no restore CD - have Win98 CD?
if Harddrive partitioned and formated - Just do 1
    1. boot from Win98 CD.
    Partition n Format
    2. Choose boot to DOS (puts u in virtual drive A)
    AT PROMPT
    3. Type drive letter of CD ( C: D: or E: )
    4. Type CD Win98
    5. Type Fdisk ( to partion drive)
    reboot n do 1 + 2
    6. Type format C: ( I do this to ckeck drive for errors)
    OR
JUST Boot from CD and follow install instructions.
1 to 6 for if you have problem with Win98 CD setting up Harddrive.

How can i recover the os in laptop after reformat...all the programs that was wiped out can still be found in my drive c ..is it possible that my os is still there?

if you still got your programs there are only 2 explanations ...
one ....you do not format the C partition ...but just reinstalled the OS in the same folder...( there is such a choice in installing OS )
the second you formatted another partition ..or .. during formatting ...it gave it an error like ...the partition could not be formatted cause.....etc...and you didnt sow it ...or ...you used a recovery cd that you made with a program for backup ...and this was made with allsetings on ...included programs ...
But in most cases you installed a new copy ...over the other ...didnt delete the C partition to format it again in NTFS ...and it just replaced the windows...asked for drivers and all even if they were thee ...they were no longer functional ...and you found the program files folder almost intact ...but with no conenctions in all programs ...or such ...

reformated twice? have you already ran diagnostics on the hdd? check first the hdd thru diagnostics it might the hdd causing the problem. if no errors found in hdd make sure it was reformated as clean install. your hdd might have partition and just reinstalled OS on he same partition without deleting partitions. Try deleting partitions then create new partitions then reinstall OS.

    Booting problem.

hello, its possible that your partition is really defective or a software that you have installed has corrupted your windows os.  reformatting might solve your problem. If you really dont want to format because you have important files.  Try the following
    1. Do not repair your OS. Install the windows Operationg System to another partition or harddisk.  By this way if you have succesfully installed the OS, you can now backup your files from your original partition. and then you can reformat the orginal partition.
    2. you can also try a Bootable Operating System from a USB flash drive or Download a LIVE Linux Os so that you can backup your file, then you can reformat
    3. you can try softwares that repair you partition, there are numerous softwares that offer to fix your partition. but it comes with a price.

After reformatting - hard drive is only 10GB

Hp and Compaq usually have drives partitioned into 2, second is used for recovery. What I'm thinking happened here might be that when you re-install your windows, you might have picked the smallest size(2nd partition). The only way out is to re-install your windows and when you do that, you kust delete the biggest partition or try partiton magic.

reformat your system.. always partition your hdd into 2 parts,, the os on one partition and your files on another,, so that anytime your system is in trouble,, you can reformat it without worries...
there must have been a virus in your system or there was something wrong in the installation of your os..
if this doesn't work,, maybe it is a serious hardware problem...
