PS3 HDMI output problems

This is the second PS3 i have had problems with as the last one was replaced by sony. When left turned off for a while (say a day at most) when i turn it back on it won't give any output through the HDMI. The screen goes black but that is it. I have tried swapping to the scart lead and it works fine, and have tried re-setting the system endless times and resetting the HDMI settings but still does not work. If left for a couple of hours it will then work again, without me touching anything or fiddling with the cables!

Any reason why this is happening to me for the second time.

Many thanks

Ed

Are you sure it is not a problem with the HDMI ports on the TV?

My playstation 3 will not display a picture i changed the settings from output HDMI to output RCA and now there is no screen on ether output but there is audio on the HDMI output how do i get the picture...

Turn off the PS3 and take the HDMI cable out, then switch it on again holding the power button for about 10-15 seconds until it gets turned off. This should reset the output settings. After that, put the HDMI cable back in and switch the PS3 on , if you did everything right it will ask you to confirm the HDMI output.

Tried to hook up ps3 to a different, older tv. was hooked up with hdmi cable and optical audio cable. bought a component cable that works with the ps3. I can't get a picture or sound. or anything else. ...

HDMI is a digital signal, so your TV and your PS3 are basically talking to each other over the connection at all times. That's why when you plug an HDMI connection into your PS3, it can detect the connection and try to switch right to it. Component cables don't work the same way, they only output information, so it's a one way street. Your PS3 is still outputting information, but it still thinks it needs to output to the HDMI port. The fix is pretty simple, and there are two options.

The Long Way
  1. Plug your PS3 into an HDMI TV.
  2. Change the Audio settings first, so your console outputs audio to a Component source.
  3. Now change the Video settings last, so the PS3 is outputting to a Component source as well.
  4. Your screen should go blank once you do this. Hit the X button once, wait a moment, then use the power button on the front of the PS3 and turn it off.
Now just plug the PS3 into the other old TV with the Component cables, and turn it on. You should have picture and sound now.

The Short Way
  1. Leave the PS3 plugged into the old TV, and turn it off with the front power button. Once the light has turned Red, hold the power button down for at least 5 seconds. Don't let go until you should hear the system beep twice.
Now you should be able to use your PS3 on the older TV without a problem.

The Short Way is a simple reset of your video card, it causes the PS3 to revert to outputting to it's out-of-box settings. If neither of these ways worked, check here at the Sony website, and one of those solutions may better fit you, but it sounds like one of the two solutions above should solve it.

Please leave a comment or rating letting me know if this solved your problem, constructive feedback is always welcome. Good luck with your console and good luck with your games.

I am having a problem getting my ps3 to display with an hdmi cable, this is the same one i have been using for a year, it has no problem with the avi outputs but when i try to switch the output to hdmi......

Please try the following :
Step 1. Turn the PS3 off into standby (red light on)
Step 2. Press and hold the power button. It will beep as soon as you press it and then about 5 seconds later it will beep again. Let go of the power button when you hear this second beep.
Step 3. Wait for your PS3 to start.
This solution basically resets the video output back to standard definition.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

No video on PS3

Use regular A/V cables on the ps3. Turn off the PS3 from the back. Go ahead and hold down the power button on the front and as your doing that turn on the ps3 from the back and keep holding the power button on the front for 5 seconds.

At this point it should reset the machine back to factory defaults and you should get video. Go ahead and change the video output to HDMI and reboot the system. On the reboot you should get video from the HDMI output, if you don't then that means you have a bad main board inside of fthe PS3.

No signal on my TV

try connecting the ps3 to the HDMI only, now when the ps3 is off and all but the single red light is on rest your finger on the on button for about 8 seconds, as soon as you touch it it will turn on but just wait a bit and you'll here the a second beep- this should reset your ps3's video output settings. Try it out, it works for me when i go back and forth from av to HDMI.

Please remember to rate my response if helpful.

MY PS3 WONT SHOW UP ON DISPLAY

Turn off the PS3, turn on manually with your finger on the power (touch) button hold until you hear the first beep (powering on) and then hear a second. This should change the output of the video to what you are currently using. If nothing, then check your input channel. Hook something else in the same spot make sure the inputs work and hook up the ps3 and repeat the last steps if needed.

Problem connecting HDMI cable

Hey there I don't see why your playstation 3 should be doing that other than the console being defective. Sony doesn't have this problem that often and actually this is the first time i have heard of such problem. Try making sure the the HDMI cable is connected at both ends all the way in and also make sure your Samsung is a 1080P which i am pretty sure it is and finally if you have a friend or another 1080P HDTV in your house i would try and see if your ps3 will support the 1080P feature. If you still have the problem even when you use a different TV then its the ps3 that is malfunctioning otherwise it would be your Samsung. Let me know how that turns out alright.

Hdmi

I can't be exactly sure without more information, but it sounds like you ps3 is outputting from another port. My ps3 originally was outputting from the component/composite cable port so in order to use the hdmi output I had to do a soft reset. That makes the ps3 sense what cable is plugged into it and automatically output through that port instead of using whatever is the saved setting.

With your ps3 turned on hold down the power button for a few second until it beeps and flashes 3 times (should be about 5 seconds). You might have to try it a few times to get it to work, but you should get picture and be able to adjust the settings on the ps3.

Ps3 wont show up on tv

Hey i just posted i have the same problem as you do but then I checked the SONY PS3 website and it solved my problem. Try resetting your video output. I'll paste what it says on the PS3 website but if that doesn't solve your problem go to the website. They have a bunch of troubleshooting solutions for this problem...

If while manually changing the Video Output Settings, the screen remains blank for more than 30 seconds, you may need to perform the following steps to reset the Video Output Settings.

  1. Make sure the Component AV Cable is connected to the [AV MULTI-OUT] port on the back of the PLAYSTATION 3 system.
  2. Connect the other end of the Component AV Cable into the video and audio RCA jacks of the TV or display monitor.
  3. While the PLAYSTATION 3 system is in standby mode (red light on the front of the system), hold down the touch-sensitive On/Off button on the front of the system until the system goes into standby mode again . (So the light cycle would go from: red light to --> green light --> then back to red light) This will ensure that you have held down the On/Off button long enough to reset the Video Output Settings.
  4. Turn ON the PLAYSTATION 3 and once the system finishes powering up, the Video Output Settings will automatically be reset to the standard resolution (or detect the current display output settings of your TV/monitor).
