Question about Vacuums

1 Answer

My Kenmore canister vacuum (model 11627515700) will not turn on. Although when I set it to CARPET the agitator does come on, however the vacuum still doesn't. Is it likely a motor or switch problem??

is there a fuse or anything to check. its only about 3 yrs old and it seems strange for the motor to be bad already.

are there any quick troubleshooting things i can do to pinpoint the exact issue.

is this a common thing for the Kenmore 116

  • grant01756 Aug 23, 2010

Thanks.. i searched ebay and did find some Kenmore 116 motors but none matched my model number (116 27515700). Will any Kenmore 116 for a canister vac work or do i need to find my exact model number, which i can't seem to do. I have the Progressive model. Hopefully any Kenmore 116 will work.

    Thanks again.

Your motor in the canister part of your vacuum is bad you can by a nee one for about $84..They have them used on ebay for $40. just type in Kenmore 116. The reason why your agitator is working is because your agitator has a separate smaller motor. You can replace the motor yourself. Thanks if you have anymore vacuum questions or any more electrical problems come to me.

Yes it is, thats why you can find their motors almost anywhere. You can take it apart and check the wireing from the switch to the motor some canister models have a fuse but if that was blown your agitator wouldnt work. I am positive that it is your motor.

Any motor will work they are all exactly the same. I don't know why they put the complete model number for the vacuum on ebay like that. They should have listed it as Kenmore vacuum 116 series motors. It's not that the motor is diffrent it's just a simple fact that ebay doesn't know all the model numbers for the Kenmore vacuums in the 116 series. That's why the your model number isn't listed.

My canister kenmore progressive is not sucking and is sptitting carpet powder dust all over the place. could it be it needs a new hpa filter? if so where on the vacuum would it be located?

Remove the hose from the canister, and turn on the vacuum. Does it produce good air flow into the hose port?. If ok, remove the hose from the sweeper unit and plug the end into the canister. If ok, check the bottom of the sweeper head for plugging of the air passages and inspect the sweeper bar for accumulation of thread, hair, and string. If the first test produced no air flow, then open the canister and remove the bag--turn the vacuum on and check for air flow into the motor. If still nothing, then check the hepa filter which should be near the air output from the canister. Go to: searspartsdirect.com and enter the sears model number from the information plate. The machine's part drawings will appear and select the vacuum case drawing which should display the hepa filter location and also be able to order the filter from the web site. Hope this helps!

Kenmore vac won't shut off, blowing heavy air from vent

For the stack of problems you have, it sounds like it be best for you to ditch it and get a new vacuum. The heavy problem sounds like a motor issue. The burning smell is most likely from the belt being loose on the power head.

Economically, you should just get a new one instead of replacing the whole system guts

Kenmore Vacuum 116.36623501 does not stay on bare floor setting

It sounds like there is something wrong with the latching assembly. GO to the Sears Parts website and enter your Model number. Look at the parts assembly for the Nozzle, and the problem will be in one of items 12 through 17.

Agitator stops when sweeper is pulled backward

If you have made no changes to the vacuum's setup and are using it on same carpet you have previously used it on with no problem, then the most likely cause is the agitator/beater bar's drive belt is worn or on some models may have a tension adjustment which is set too loosely. This can also be caused by having the vacuums height adjustment set to low for the carpet or flooring you are using it on, causing to much drag when the vacuum is pulled backwards for the agitator to overcome.

The vast majority of agitators turn in a forward direction, as if it would pull the vacuum forward, when you pull the vacuum backwards the drag is increased.

So...First check height adjustment (a no cost fix), then check out the tension adjustment (if present on you model, some engage when top of vacuum is tilted back after stepping on the release pedal) Lastly, consider changing belt especially if you have had the vacuum awhile or if it gets a fair amount of use or it you seem to need to use it on a low height setting all the time to vacuum up debris.

Hope this helps!
