Question about Estate Dryers

1 Answer

The timer knob is faulty. At times it won't work at all, and most of the time we have to prop something under it to place upward pressure on the knob in order for it to keep working. What is causing this, and how can we fix it?

Whirlpool Ultimate Care II gas dryer won't turn off.

Dryer Won't Stop Running
  • Ultimate Car II Dryers are fitted with a mechanical timer that sends an impulse to the control circuit board to stop running once the set amount of drying time has elapsed. This is because, should an electronic timer fail, this would necessitate the replacement of the entire circuit board. Confirm that the mechanical timer is indeed broken by opening the dryer's door. If the dryer stops, the circuit board is working fine and is not the problem. Simply slide off the protective faceplate of the dryer, unscrew the control board beneath, and flip it over. Connected to the back of the timer's knob should be a small round device with two wires running to the circuit board within the body of the dryer. Unscrew this device from the back of the knob and disconnect the wires. A replacement timer costs a few dollars and should screw into place without trouble. Reconnect the wires and put the dryer back together. It should work fine now.

The timing knob on my dryer wouldn't turn, it would just spin without selecting a setting so I pulled the knob off and tried using pliers to turn the plastic shaft to select a setting. It worked a couple...

Both the timer and the knob is replaceable.
Locate the model number of the unit. Here's info on how to find it:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=+86673100&pathTaken=partSearch

You can get the timer and the knob from www.searspartsdirect.com or call 1-800-252-1698.
Once you have the part, remove the screws from the back of the control panel, removing the back cover. From there you should see the timer. It will either have one wiring harness or many wires attached to the timer. INSURE UNIT IS UNPLUGGED WITH NO POWER TO IT. If there is a harness, unplug the harness. The timer will be held in place either by a couple screws on the front of the control panel that is normally hidden by the knob AND/OR a screw INSIDE the control panel at the timer. There could also be a plastic tab holding the timer in place. Raise this tab and turn timer until it is free. Remove timer and put new timer in place. Fit harness onto timer.
If there are many wires attached to the old timer, I would hold the new timer in my hand and transfer the wires one-by-one to insure you get the right wires on the right terminal tab. Once wires are transferred, remove old timer and put new timer in place.
At this point. put new knob on the timer on the front of the control panel. Plug unit in, stay clear of exposed wiring, and test dryer. If it works, replace back cover and you are done.
If it doesn't work, further troubleshooting will be needed and Ill need the make and model number.
Hope this helps. Please take a minute to give a testimonial if I've help you.
Thanks, G

How to remove timer knob from Kenmore washer, model #29422800

I can't remember if the timer has to be pushed in or pulled out to remove it, but the timer knob comes off by turning it in a counter-clockwise direction. Once the knob is off, the clear plastic dial underneath should pull off. There is a single screw under the dial that holds the timer in place. You can access the timer by popping the operator console up. There is a release tab in the front corner of the console on each side. Simply slide a putty knife under the console at each front corner and push straight in from the front. The console will lift up after each tab is released.

If you have questions, or need further advice, please let me know.

PS Is there a particular reason why you are trying to remove the knob? Do you suspect a defective timer? Some problems may give symptoms that make it appear to be timer related, but it may not. I just don't want you to spend money on a timer unnecessarily, if the problem is attributed to something else that is less expensive.

Dryer just stopped working. Turned knob to desired time and pushed start, nothing happens. When knob is on OFF position and I push the start button, it makes the regular BUZZ sound - times up, clothes...

Remove and inspect the timer knob for a crack or missing tension clamp.
Carefully place it back on the timer shaft while paying attention to the (D) shape in the knob and the shaft.
If they are aligned correctly notice where the position arrow is pointing, ie; off---run--etc.
You may well need a new knob.

If it is a digital timer and u have display, thenyou must make sure it is set to manual and not flashing auto, or the oven will not work.
If it is an anologue timer tweak the knobs until you can see a hand symbol showing this is the manual mode.
If no display of any kind, and u are sure u have a supply to oven then timer could be faulty.
Hope this helps.

U must ensure that u have a supply to the oven befor trying to alter timer.
Plz rate solution.
Thanks.

Your automatic defrost system is malfunctioning. Problem could be in the defrost timer, heaters, or defrost thermostat. I suggest you call the place of purchase and request service. At 2 and a half years the parts will not be covered under warranty.
