hey, thx for the quick answer.

the bios is correctly, pretty sure about that one.

he accepts the hard-drive, en boots from the cd rom.

only problem is that i can not see anything.

    (accept the flashing cursor)

i managed to boot ubuntu cd one time, i try to boot it from cd, so it doesn't need the drive, but there came a error the first time, and it reboots, after that i try it again, see ubuntu starts up again, and two minutes later i have the flashing cursor again.

after that it did not start up anymore.

Remember, there are many things you can do which will make your Windows installation as well as your laptop unstable, or even make it so it will not boot. Try to get into your bios. Different computers have different ways to get there - some have it on the screen, such as "hit delete key toenter bios" or "hit f12 to enter bios" or some other key combination. I think you enter the bios on your computer by pressing F10 repeatedly while booting. You should get to the setup screen. See if your hard drive is listed. You should see a hard drive as well as a dvd drive. If your drive is not listed, either someone has changed your setup so it is not the boot drive, or your drive may have gone bad. While you are in the setup, if it is not already the first choice, make your dvd (or cd) drive the first boot device. If it shows up, make the hard drive the second choice. Then when you boot, the Ubuntu should load. Try not to make any other changes, as you can make your laptop unuseable.

Say operating system not found

Reset bios to defaults and try again. If that doesn't work then its possible that your hard drive has failed.

Black screen

Your computer is not passing the Power On Self Test or POST. It is either due to a loose connection or a dead component.

If possible clean the gold fingered connectors of the RAM modules. As this is a likely cause.

A computer technician will be able to get it running again.

Take care!

Monitor comes up black i can see the cursor but nothing else any ideas? it boots normally but once past the boot screen its all black with just the cursor showing

Nevermind the more I thought about it, your not getting to the operating system. The PCs used to say something to the effect of 'operating system not found' after the POST if it could not find a boot device. I think that's what's happening here, you have to go into to BIOS and see if it can detect the hard drive. When the laptop boots look for a message saying 'press F1 for setup' or something along those lines... if it comes up too quick to see start hitting F1, Esc, Del keys right after the power lights comes on, BIOS is usually one of those keys. Once in BIOS look for a 'devices' type tab and search for where it reads the hard drive If there's nothing there then its your problem, and you need to get the BIOS to autodetect it. Respond if you have questions.

Oresario laptop starts but goes to black screen with cursor

Windows is not starting. Try to start in safe mode and if you can, do a system restore back to when it was working.
If you can't do this, then you'll need to insert the system disk and boot from it and choose the option to repair your computer.
I suspect that you have corrupt Windows files or a corrupt registry. Repairing it with the system disk should solve the problem. Either that, or you will have to do a reinstallation.

You have a hard drive issue. If you can boot to the BIOS run a short smart test on the HD to see if it passes or fails

Windows XP will not boot up. After Asus start-up screen, screen goes black with blinking cursor.

That blinking cursor is the way in which the BIOS is telling you that Windows is missing - its most critical, core files have been corrupted beyond repair. The only thing you can do is to reinstall using the recovery cd or your own Windows install disk and an external cd unit.

Blank screen with cycling colours (no BIOS; no POST)

Try running diagnostics. Tap F12 repeatedly on the dell logo till you get the boot device menu. Choose diagnostics. Go through it.

If it doesnt even pull up the diagnostics, you can follow this walkthrough from dell's website.
