Question about Vacuums

1 Answer

I have a Miele S1721 Powerhouse upright vacuum. When the belt broke I took it into the shop (because when i tried to replace the belt, the tension was so tight I couldn't get it back together!!). When I got it home I DISCOVERED THAT THE HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT DIDN'T WORK anymore. It seems like it's set really hight, because it no longer contacts and brushes the carpet. So it's now useless. I went back to the shop and the tech denied that there was anything wrong. (I didn't have the vac with me). Now I don't trust the shop. Any ideas???? Can anyone tell me how to fix this or recommend a good repair shop in the San Diego, East County area of San Diego CA?

Hi
The Miele uprights (S170 and upwards) with the Powerhouse title are ALL Panasonic uprights which have been at one time sold in the UK. Therefore the upright may use TWO drive belts which need to be looked at: Take off the sole plate and examine the drive belt which is around the beater bar. Check that this belt is moving easily. Then look at the fly wheel to the motor (usually to the left hand side) and check that the smaller motor belt is moving - it may be broken which is why the beater bar isn't moving and why tension is tight.
Generally NONE of the Miele Powerhouse models have a manual selector for height adjustment - they all use auto adjustment which means no manual selector. The vacuum principle means that general carpet which comes into contact with the brush creates a vacuum anyway between the brush and the floor. If the brush isn't touching the floor then its a possibility dirt or debris has managed to get between the bottom 2 rollers after the beater bar. Check behind the wheels to see that there is nothing there - most auto adjusting Powerhouse models will have a spring behind the wheel and it may have come off.

My vacuum cleaner brush stopped rotating. Just before it stopped, I smelled some burnt smell. Any idea?

Hi there,
Almost certainly you have broken the drive belt. THese machines have a rubber belt that is designed to snap if you get the roller brush stuck on something. The most common reason for this to occur is that you **** up the end of a rug, the curtain or a sock. This will stop the roller but the drive shaft will continue to spin which chews through the rubber belt.
What you will need to do is buy a new belt and fit it on.
Hope this is helpful for you. If it is please take a moment to give me a rating. If you are in Australia and need somewhere to get you miele belt from try nelsonvacuums or VacuumSpot.

I need a complete lower unit for the S171i Powerhouse, Is it available?

It should be available for purchase. It may not be a stock item but you should contact your local Miele dealer so that they can get a price for you. Miele parts are only available at Miele unfortunately.
Again, check on the price of the housing VS. a new model.

Good luck.

Brush is not spinning

Usually, this is caused by the brush assembly end bearings becoming bound up with string, thread, and hair. Remove the brush and clean the bearings and end shafts. Oil them lightly with 3-1 oil or similar. Check the condition of the drive belt and replace it if badly worn or broken. Check the rotation of the brush by hand before installing the belt. Hope this helps!

Roller bar belt broke on my dc17 animal. how do i

This belt isn't available at your normal retail stores like Walmart or Home Depot. You can try your local vacuum repair shop, but not all vacuum shops carry Dyson parts. The best bet is online. You can get this belt here at this link and shipping is only $1.99. That might be worth it rather than driving all over trying to find that belt.

Mine is a new upright Meile power plus. When I have it

Sounds like you have a clog. There are screws in the back of the vacuum that you can undo and find the clog. If you need assistance or if that doesn't solve the problem.

Miele upright not sucking up?

Sounds like there is something blocking the main airway. I doubt its the filter. You may have to partially disassemble it. Maybe a hairball or something is blocking it I sucked up one of my daughters thin socks one time, had to take it apart to get it out.

My vac has an access panel in the back for this. Thankfully or I would have never been able to get it out. Remove a couple of screws, look for any blockage.

Unplug the machine, and go hunting. If its not in the airways, it is likely close the motor blades. You can't mess anything up, so grab a screwdriver and have at it. Just remember to replace all screws in place when done.

Hope this helps some. Good Luck!

Beater Bar

Something may have come apart under the nozzle cover, you will have to take the cover off to see. Including a picture, maybe it will help.
