Question about Toshiba Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I can't connect to a wireless internet. I think it's a problem with the driver. The model is a663, Toshiba Satellite. I've download a wi fi driver and intalled it, it worked for a few minutes and then the internet crashed again. Thanks, Bah.

It could be caused by conflicting software, if you have your device software and windows software trying to setup wifi connections.
Check on the task bar for two icons and right click on one of the icons and select disable.

My wifi device actually works better using windows to configure wifi so give them both a try.

If this is not the problem try renewing IP address,

Click Start on task bar,
click the Run... icon
type cmd in the box and click ok
in the cmd box type ipconfig /release
then ipconfig /renew

Make sure you have windows wireless enabled only,

go to control panel and double click administrative tools,

    double click services,

scroll down to windows zero configuration,

in startup type select automatic and click start, apply and ok.

Go back to control panel and double click network connections,

right click on your wireless connection and go to properties,

select the middle tab and tick the box use windows to configure my network connection and apply.

    Close down all open boxes,

right click on the windows wireless icon on the task bar and select view connections and connect to the network you want.

If this doesn't work and you have a network cable try connecting your laptop direct to the router. Then add another comment with an up date. Good luck!

Using device manager uninstall, reboot and reinstall the wi fi chip. If this does not work you are in deep doo doo because the chip is fubar. I had the same issue with a Toshiba laptop but I returned it since it was a few days old. The chip is soldered to mo bo and unless you have real special tools and skills it cannot be removed.

The Wireless Antenna On-Off switch is on the Right side. The Wireless Antenna LED is to the left of the On-Off switch. It glows when the wireless antenna is in use.

It has to have an > optional
Turn the laptop over, Front facing you.
The Battery Compartment is on the Front Right corner.
The Wi-Fi Compartment Cover is on the Back Left corner.

Remove the single screw in the right middle of the cover. (Philips head)
See if a Wi-Fi PCI Mini Card is installed.

No?
You'll have to obtain a Wi-Fi PCI Mini Card for your Toshiba.

Unable to connect to wi-fi

I think it is saying that the wifi "card" is set so that it is not being configured by windows.

In XP

Control panel > Network connections

Under LAN or High-speed internet you will see an icon labelled wireless network connection. Right click on this and then click properties. You will see three tabs at the top
General - Wireless Networks - Advanced

Click on wireless networks
There should be a tick-box saying Use windows to configure my wireless network settings. I expect that, in your case, the box is unticked which means that the software supplied by the vendor of the wifi card is configuring the settings. I find that it is usually more reliable to let windows do it.

So tick the box and click OK. You may then have to reboot.

Wi-Fi not connecting on Toshiba Satellite A15-S157 PC Notebook

you tried giving it a static IP address rather than using automatic settings (i.e. DHCP). Sure enough, this cured the problem, connected fine. I looked in the dhcp server logs and while it was not complaining that the IP address pool was all used, it did seem that all the IP addresses available were being used. I increased the number of IP addresses available to be allocated by the dhcp server and problem solved. The big mystery to me is why Windows XP would report this as a problem with a weak signal? Isn't the access to the dhcp server and the allocation of the IP address at a layer above the wireless connection? Anyway, it's useful to be warned that the wireless diagnostics are misleading.
