Question about Amana Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

My Amana Cool Zone stopped blowing cool air. I live on the 3rd floor in a small apartment and getting the A/C in the window and installed was a chore on its own. The unit stays in the window year round because I don't have a place to store it.

The unit needs to be cleaned. Remove it from the window, take it to an area where you can wash the fins off with a garden hose. Yes, I read what you stated. Third floor, chore installing. Been there, I have the T-shirt. Unit sitting on driveway, or up on sawhorses, the case cover needs to be removed. Probably four screws on the back, two in the front. Once the cover is removed, all aluminum fins you see are squirted with a steady stream of water, ensuring all dirt, and dust is removed from in-between the fins. Unit is tilted, and drained. Let it dry. Reinstall the case cover, reinstall in your window. I know it may sound ludicrous to use water on a unit that plugs into electricity. Bear in mind that the unit is allowed to dry for a period of a few hours, in the hot sun, and also when it rains, guess what gets wet? The first time I was shown this by a motel owner, I thought the gentleman was crazy. Nope, works great every time. Have used this method for years now on my own personal stuff. (Suggest you obtain a dolly, and two guy's with size 5 hats, and 44 jumpers, to help you)

Thanks. I don't have a garden hose or access to one, but if I' m able to get this unit to my fire escape, would buckets of water work? I'm in NYC in a old building without an elevator and an absent super. Should I just buy new one and pay for delivery and installation?

Appreciate your response joannealy. Would like to state that Heatman 101 is the absolute Expert in this field, IMHO. Boy you're in a pickle. Yes, of course purchasing a new unit, and having it installed is the best solution, IMHO. It isn't cost effective however, and money doesn't grow on trees. It is effective on saving your back muscles from possibly being strained, and peace of mind with a warranty, should problems occur with the unit. Buckets of water from the third floor of a fire escape. "Look out below!" lol! It really needs to be water under pressure. I suppose one could use a type of thin duster to dislodge the heavy 'gunk' in-between the fins, and then follow with buckets of water. Not a very professional approach at all, and can't guarantee the outcome.
If funds are available to purchase a new unit, have it delivered, and installed, this IMHO is the way to go.

I lost you at my the end but the 2 ton unit should be able to cool 960 sqft. Sounds like a refrigerant problem. Air conditioners should cool the air 15 to 20 degrees. This means 80 degrees going into the machine in the return should be 60 to 65 degrees coming out in the supply. If you are in that range than it's likely never going to cool the space.

Sounds like the heater is on as well. Even if ac is not working it shouldn't get hotter than outside air temp. Possible stuck relay.

is it a split system? majority of problems, lets say 95% occur during install, u may have a leak! A pinhole at that, but maybe installer missed it, your out of labor warranty, call a 3rd party contractor and have them inspect it!

Rheem Criterion II air conditioner runs but it does not cool

Check air temp out vent should be approx 20 degrees colder than room temp if it is your unit is too small for the amount of space you are cooling.Rule of thumb 1 ton(12,000btu's) for every 400 sq ft of uninsulated space

Failure in comfort zone one

There is a capacitor connected to the motor on the compressor. If it fails, the motor won't start and the safety thermal cutoff will stop voltage at the motor terminals. There are fuses inside the power interrupt box on the side of the outside unit. One of them may have blown

do you have a totaline t-stat. they and some other brands have a fan recirculation setting in the installers menu.

this is assuming that this happens in addition to the heating or cooling normally

Air handler only blows air for 3-5 minutes before shut off & not cycling frequently

Sounds like it could be a very weak run capacitor on the blower motor. Run capacitors are sized specifically to the needs of the motor. When a run cap gets weak, the motor trys to compensate for it by drawing more power. More power draw = more heat in the motor, then the motor will overheat and shut off to protect itself. When the motor cools off it will automatically restart and run until it overheats again. Keep in mind that I am a technician that normally diagnoses equipment in a hands on manner. There are many practices and concepts that transcend all air conditioning systems but it is a constantly evolving industry. I live in south eastern WA and I don't see Amana units except as window units. It is possible to have something else causing this problem (faulty thermostat, failing thermal relay(if used), problem with electronic controls(if used)) there are a lot of potential variables
