Find the leak first, then dry out the wiring and thermostat. extremely hot water indicates one of the elements has gone bad and is returning to ground. If you have a ohmmeter, with the power off disconnect the wires to the elements and check from ground to the terminals. If there is deflection on the ohm scale, you have a grounded element. I suggest you also relpace the high limit cutout as well, it's the part of the thermostat with the red button.

Will not heat we replaced both elements but still no hot water rheem model no.82v522marlene we suspect we had a power surge during last storm because the furnace went out also at the same time

Hi I suspect your thermostat will have also been damaged if you had a surge I always replace thermostats at the same time as the elements
Also check the wiring as sometimes surges can melt the copper core of the wiring, but be careful always turn off the power first before any electrical works!

You will have to run a continuity test on each element. Turn off power to the heater. Remove the cover from each element and with an ohm meter set to ohms 1000 check for continuity on each element where the power is connected. If you have no reading the element needs replacing.

Hello Check the red overtemp reset button at the temp control.Check for contintuity at the elements with a volt meter (pull one wire off first) they should have a reading otherwise they are open & shot.Last is overdrawing (busted pipe) shut off the cold water supply for a 1/2 hour and open it back up and feel the hot water supply pipe.Is it hot?The tank can't keep up with the demand.

look for a badly connected power line ont he bottom element, or any connection upstream of the power terminals. voltage readings usually drop to that range when you only have one side of the 220v circuit connected.

Sounds like a squirrel inside water heater

Hi,
The noise is inherent in electric hot water heaters. It is the noise that the water makes when it is being heated by electric heating elements. Mineral buildup on the elements can make it worse, so changing the elements can help...but will not totally elimenate the noise. When I install a new tank and turn it on all I have to do is listen to it to see if it is working or not...even brand new will make a sound...it is the sound of hot water... :-)

I would say then the heating element has a resistive short to ground. The 1.98m Ohm reading is high, but not high enough -- should be infinite. I would say replace heating element... And, when you install new one, make sure there is no water leaking thru heating element cavity and ensure area around cavity is clean & "in order".

Warm water only

You can eliminate the shower control knob possibility by turning on your hot water anywhere else in the house. If you get hot water in other places, then it could be the knob causing it. A substantial lime buildup in the tank can also cause poor heat transfer from the elements to the water.
