Question about Kenmore Elite 900 sq. in. Cooking Area Gas Grill 16690\17690

1 Answer

The first two burners on the left light and have good gas flow. When I light the middle and the left two burners the flames flicker and go out, like there is not enough gas. I cleaned the burners, tried two different tanks and it still is not lighting. This just recently started happening.

If the gas lights & doesn't stay on, then there is a flame sensing issue. Remote sensor may have flame impingement (dirty). Clean flame rod sensor with light sandpaper or cloth.

Gas flow burner

try adjusting the gas/ air ratio shield. that is the tin collar over the opening where the gas jet is . moving it back or forward varies the amount of air available for the mixture and alters the flame height. and colour.

sounds like the injector hole is too largefor that burner have you had it converted reciently
lpg injectors are only half the size hole of natural gas injector, could have a blockage in the injector diverting the gas flow

Lighting pilot light

Pilot assembly is located inside the bottom compartment, between the the two middle burners while the gas valve is located under the burner manifold. Make sure that the gas line where the unit is connected is open. You need to turn the gas valve knob to "Pilot" position and depress it (to allow the gas to flow on pilot) then light the pilot assembly using a lighter with extended nozzle ( burner igniter). Once the flame is present at the pilot assembly, wait for about 15 seconds (allowing thermopile to heat up) the gradually release the gas valve knob. If the pilot flame is stable, turn the gas valve knob to "ON" position and set the thermostat to desired temperature setting. This will ignite the burners and heat up the oil to set temperature. Just remember, do not do this if there is no oil on fry tank.

sounds to me like your other burner isn't getting the same amount of gas flow. what you need to do is give your grille a good cleaning and check the lines for any leaks. you will always smell gas so it will be hard to tell by smell alone. Test your lines by wrapping them tight with foil or something removable and turn your grille on to see if the flame gets bigger.

Burner won't turn on

The first question I have is the flame size good on the 2 burners that did light? If the flames are smaller, then you might just need to turn off the tank and disconnect it, then reconnect it and very slowly turn the tank valve on again. You might have turned the tank valve on too fast causing the excess flow valve to close and only give a trickle of gas through. On the other hand, if the flame size was good on both burners, then your igniter may not be lighting the rear burner, but typically if the other 2 burners light, the 3rd burners lights off the others. Did you try lighting the 3rd burner manually with a lighter to see if it was getting gas? If it lights manually, then the spark igniter may be your problem. It's also possible the rear burner has clogged holes from rust or drippings and is difficult to light. Without seeing it, it's just the process of elimination til it works. Try all those things and see if that gets it going for you. Check out my tips & tricks on gas grill lighting for more detailed info.
