I have the above model that keeps shutting down within 15 seconds of it loading the windows desktop (win98).
It also keeps flashing the LED nearest the number 1 on the battery indicator. This notebook doesn't appear to want to run of the battery at all (it doesn't seem to hold a charge).
The shutting down problem is still happening when plugged into the mains. It doesn't do it if it's booted in safe mode though.

I once installed a trojan which caused this to happen - it would run a script at bootup which caused a shutdown. It was quite easy to remove in safe mode (can't remember how exactly, but read about it on the web). Perhaps you might have something similar? Worth a check..
If this is not the case then try formatting and reinstalling the OS.

If you can't get the system to boot normally under A/C power with the battery installed, try pulling the battery out of the notebook. I suspect the power management is reading a bad battery and trying to either suspend or shut down the notebook. In safe mode, the power management device is inactive.
Also, if you consider another notebook, stay away from Sony. They really aren't good value in my opinion.

Check the power management configuration in Windows to start. You can do this in Safe Mode so it shouldn't be too hard. It's possible your battery is going bad but have it checked, if the battery is good your power control module in the laptop may be the problem. I hope the laptop is still under warranty if the worst is happening.

I've got a NV52, running windows 7. The card reader installed drivers after I inserted it, but I don't see it in 'my computer' as drive. Is there something that I need to update?
