E 18 Error message here as well. New batteries, fully charged rechargebale batteries, fresh alkaline batteries....neither made a difference. There was no physical damage to the camera...it just started to have issues opening and closing. Please help!

S2IS lens extends, but if you try to zoom more than once it will not move. Turning on and of just makes noises.

E18 is a lens error and needs to be serviced by Canon. You may qualify for an upgrade to the S3 IS for a deep discount if you are interested.

I took the advice given on this site for other Canon cameras with the same problem and I got my S2IS to work. The lens was extended and wouldn't close when the camera was shut off. Here is what I did to solve the problem:

In all these attempts, the camera was turned on and within the first few seconds the following solutions were tried (the camera would seem like it was trying to operate the lens but would stop after a bit and then the dreaded E18 code would appear):

  1. I tried tapping the camera in the palm of my hand but all it did was make my hand sore.
  2. I tried banging the camera body on a hard surface (a book in my case).
  3. I tried forcing the lens where it was touching the camera body so that the gap was the same all around the lens. You were supposed to hear a "click" when it went back into its proper position but I gave up on this tactic. The lens is still closer to the camera body on one side but after step 4, it works so I'm not worried about it.
  4. I tried blowing some air into the opening between the lens and the camera case while banging the camera in the palm of my hand. After three attempts, the camera sound changed and eventually the lens retracted. When I powered up the camera again, the lens extended partways then starting doing the same thing (chattering sound, like the lens was trying to move but couldn't). I continued with the blowing of the air until finally the camera stopped making weird sounds and the lens now extends and functions like it should.

Lens errors (E18 errors on Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

the E18 means the lens system has a problem. I had it with my S2 and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Eventually it stopped working. The only solution was sending it to repair, they changed the lens system.
