How to set the tension

The carrier and bobbin are removed. Place the thread in the carrier with the thread dispensing counterclockwise. Place the thread between the metal pieces (tension). let the carrier hang from your finger and bob it slightly. It should extend one inch. If it doesn't then you can adjust it by turning the small screw slightly until it does what I said. Now, replace this assembly. The top tension you can start at three. The sewing should be an even pull between the upper and lower thread. If the thread knot is in the center of the material it is right. If the knot is under the material then raise the upper tension. If the knot is on the upper material then you should lower the upper tension. The key is to start with the bobbin tension correct and adjust the upper tension until the knot is in the center of the fabric

Ruffler foot bobbin tangles

I suspect that the bobbin thread you are talking about is in fact the top thread that has been pulled under the material, make sure that the top thread is pulled into the tention discs firmly and that there is no fuzz in with the thread, also make sure the top thread is properly threaded and is actually in the take up bar .

My bernette 65 is bunching underneath. How do I resolve that?

Grasp the threads and hold them down when you start your seam. If it still happens make sure your thread is seated into your upper tension mechanisms. If that still isn't solving your problem... CLEAN between the tension discs with some sturdy fabric folded in half. (wax build up from threads can cause issues)

Good luck

Sews great on top of the material but the bobbin thread is all knotted up

I know that you do not want to hear it but your top threading is not right. Try this test, put your presser foot up and pull on the top thread, it should feed smoothly. If not, you are not making sure that the thread is going through the tension discs on your way down. Rethread and make sure you are not using old thead, Try using a new needle. Read your manual, all machines are different even if you have been sewing for years. If, you do not have your manual, download one for free at www.singerco.com and enlarge the diagrams to see what you are doing clearly.

Bird nest when trying to sew. Under material by bobbin - tried changing needle, bobbin. Tension - no change to the problem from Auto for regular sewing to 2 for embroidery

i think you have something catch on the tension guides. Try to clean out anything you can see and pull a thread towards the needle. I have done this with a small knot to snare anything but be gentle. Also, rethread carefully.
Try cleaning the bobbin case too

How to stop bobin thread from knotting

When loading the bobbin there is most likely not enough tension on the thread letting it overlap incorrectly. Try wrapping thread around a tensioner when filling and that should help. That way the bobbin is rolled as tight as the tension on the upper thread when sewing.

Make sure your machine is set to feed material. There may be a switch or knob somewhere on your machine to lower the "feed dogs" (the little metal teeth that pull the material through the machine). If they are down, the material won't feed so the machine will sew in place. More likely, since its knotting on the bottom, your machine is probably not threaded correctly. Rethread the machine, and try again.
Yes, the thread on the bottom IS the needle thread.
