HOW TO ENTER SAFE MODE
hold down F8 when it powers up. May need to remove battery and power cord. New windows 8 and probably windows 10 do not fully power down usually you have to hold shift key when shutting down windows from operating system. So it may not go into safe mode without it being shut down fully.

You could have a corruption in the script or a process that won't stop. Try holding down on the power button until the screen goes dark and all lights go out. That is a hard shut down without saving settings. After it shuts down (finally) power it back up. Hit the F8 key on your keyboard the moment your machine goes to the black screen before it can load windows. That is the safe mode. Move the highlight up to safe mode or safe mode with networking and allow it to continue to boot up. Then, when it's completed the process and windows displays that it is in safe mode, do a normal restart. That should resolve the issue.

My laptop won't shut down - it goes to the shutdown screen with the "logging off" on it but that's as far as it gets. I have to hold down the power button, but this is happening now every time I try to...
you have some process that gets stuck. try the follow:
  1. start your computer and press F8 to load Windows in safe mode.
  • now shut it down and see if it worked.
  • if it didn't work, try to load windows on safe mode with no network and see if it shuts down
2. did you install anything lately? if so, try to remove it and see if it fixed the problem. 3. before you shut down, press CTR+SHIFT+ESC and check the processes running. look for the processes that are consuming a lot of memory or CPU and check on google if those should be running or not.

Most likely your power supply is faulty. You can test it with a voltmeter to determine if this is the cause or if it's the motherboard.

Upon power up, the notebook begins the process of running windows vista but then a mesage comes up that reads "configuring updates stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete. Do not turn off your computer" after about 30...

Try booting in safe mode (press F8 right at the end of the bios boot screen and select safe mode). If the problem still persists while running in safe mode then you probably have a hardware problem. In this case power down and re-check all of your connections, reseat any add-on cards, check all power cables, etc. If the problem goes away while in safe mode, then your problem is software related. In that case (while in safe mode still) try removing software and/or hardware drivers and rebooting normally to see if the problem goes away.

A fresh re-install of XP is always a good cure on these type of systems as well.

2 very annoying problems.
plz stand by is just a power safe option for ur laptop. with some laptops when u shut the screen they hibernate with others they go to stand by and others too shutdown. and the power button on ur machine is also configured to shutdown ur machine when its being pressed. u can change these setting in the control panel\power options. hope it solves ur problem
