My needle bar driving arm on my Singer 457 has no tension. Without tension I cannot adjust the stitch length or needle position.

Unthread the machine, RAISE the presser foot, and re-thread from the beginning. Verify the thread path is correct.

If this doesn't work, the tension disk may need adjustment or repair.

Singer 7442 won't stitch at all. It picks up the bobbin thread nicely, but after that won't stitch at all. Any suggestions?

Sound like one or the other of the threads is stuck. Completely un- thread your machine and remove the bobbin. See if the needle moves freely with the machine unthreaded. If it does, carefully rethread the machine and reinsert the bobbin, making sure the bobbin thread is feeding the correct direction. Let us know what happens.

What way are we supposed to put in the replacement needle in a singer stitch sew quick machine? The loop stitch isn't looping

The needle should be inserted so that the flat side faces the front of the Sew Quick. (The flat side should face the set screw that secures the needle in the Sew Quick.) See figure 11 (on page 2) of the manual. One link to the manual is currently: http://www.hayneedle.com/images/PDF/MICL002.pdf . Make sure that you are using the DHx1 needle.

If the stitches still aren't looping, make sure that you have threaded the needle and bobbin correctly. The thread should start at the back of the needle and be pulled to the front.

I hope this helps.

What is the difference in the length of the needle on a "handy stitch" as opposed to the "stitch sew quick machine?

Check your manual for the "System" of needle
a normal sewing machine needle has a "System" or dimension
called 15x1 or 705 H. That indicates the length, the circumference
etc. If the needle you received with the machine is the same length as the above system then you should be ok. Also most often the needle package for most machines will be labeled "Universal"

What kind of thread are you using. The most often problem today is that the thread is too thick for the size of needle. Try using a Metallica size 90 or a top stitching needle size 90
if the thread is a cotton type or a quilting thread it is often to thick to travel easily through the eye of a needle quickly to form a good stitch.

If you are using a threadcutter on the Left side of the machine, it may not leave enough slack when you go to start a new stitch, and as the needle decends, the thread is pulled through the eye.

Just try to pull a little more thread through before you recommence.......just why manufacturers would locate a threadcutter where it will not quite allow enough slack thread for the needle to move down for the next stitch without unthreading the needle is one of life's great imponderables.
