This is called Red Ring of Death or RROD by the community, it means that
the CPU or GPU or both have a bad solder joint, that is caused from
rapid heating and cooling from poor cooling design of the xbox 360. To
fix it is pretty simple. Follow these instructions to take apart your
360:
http://www.rrodfix.com/how-to-take-apart-the-microsoft-xbox-360-game-console.html
Stop once you've removed the dvd drive. Now Remove the fans from the
back, and set them on the heatsink on the right the flat one, and make
sure they are pointing where the air is going up. Put a peice of of
carboard or plastic something non conductive in between the heatsinks to
prevent airflow from the fans. Turn on the 360, and leave it til it
goes from 3 rings to 2 rings, wait 3 minutes, then switch the fan over
to the other side. Wait about as long as you did for the other one then
turn off the 360. Wait 1 hour for the 360 to cool off. DO NOT move the
360 while it is cooling down durning this period or you will permantly
ruin it, the solder is being reflowed. After an hour, put the fans back,
and turn the 360 on, it should work. Once its working, I recommend
doing a 12 volt mod on the fans to prevent RROD from happening again,
and changing out the thermal paste with artic silver 5.
If its what i think it is then the compound between the gpu and the heatsink is probably wearing out. Thats whats going on on mine. Then again i'm fixing the red rings...again... When you play it will be fine then all the lines appear and you cant see, then on the dashboard the avatar is pretty much invisible? Then this is probably the case. You might have early symptoms of Red rings, maybe not, Sorry i cant be too much help..
Cracked solder points try turning it on with the fan unpluged and wait untill you get the 2 red rings lights 1 and 3 then wait until the xbox shuts off then wait a couple of min. then reconnect the fan and turn it on to see what happends.
Three red lights on the ring of light is an indication of a hardware failure
1. Turn off the xbox 360, disconnect the cables wait for 20 seconds reconnect the cables and turn it back on.
2. Check the light on the power supply ( The big brick that goes to your wall ) If the light is green that means the power supply is OK If the light is Red that means the power supply needs to be replaced
3. If above steps doesn't work, you need to contact xbox customer support to get your xbox repaired and shipping and handling will be covered.
First take off my hard drive on the 360. Then plug it to the tv not with HDTV (use the red, yellow and white make sure it is on tv not HDTV) because it will not work for HDTV setting . then plugit into the wall with the 360 laying down not up and down and turned it on. (no picture but sound) with the 360 on take 1 towel fold it long ways and wraped it around 360 from back to front (make sure you cover the fans in the back to make it over heat.) leave your 360 on until it red rings (you can hear the 360 quit down. it takes about 15-30 mins depending on how fast it over heats. once this happens unwrap the 360 and turn it off wait 5 secs and power it back on and there you go you should have picture and sound again. if you still have problem you can now can send it to get repaired since there is a 3 year warrenty for red ringed 360's.
Hello Snarker it sounds like you have a bad AV cable, try replacing it with a different one( It will costs $5-10). If there is still a problem try removing your HDD ( the hard drive which is removed from the top of your xbox 360). If neither of those seem to fix your screen's issue, you may have an internal device that has overheated or come loose, I would recommend try leaving your xbox on and see if red rings appear on your console Like this(they might be in a different idea I am just letting you know where to look) . If they do you can send your xbox back to Microsoft wait 2-4 weeks and get it back for free.
I hope that helped and if you need anymore assistance please let me know.
if it has been sent back 3 times already then phone xbox support and tell then this, they will probably offer to replace it with a new unit or give you some freebies etc and get it repaired again ;)
Salutations nofear2313, The "Ring of Death" is a known issue with Xbox 360's and Microsoft has actually extended their manufacture’s warranty to 3 years to cover this type of problem. I would contact 1-800-4MYXBOX to see how to get the unit serviced. Hope this helps. Jon Go Ahead. Use Us.
