Hello

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.

Kind Regards
Andrea

you are not swapping from mAC to PC and back , right?
try other USB ports.
many external drives do not run with out an external power pack.
elements, use 4 diffr. 18watt power packs, Are you using the right one?

so plug that in ,first. then plug in USB , w7 must go Ding dong
or the USB is DEAD. (use this as #1 fact to follow)
then put ear to the case of drive, hear it spin?
if not ,there is no power, for SURE.
solve that first.
ok, it spins. (soft whirl\'g sound, do this when new to memorize how GOOD sounds)
for a tests, leave the USB cable , not connected.
let w7 boot to the desktop.
now plug in the USB HDD, cable.
W7 goes, Ding dong.
then see the USB icon in the tray, does it see the drive>?
Y/n?
click on that tray icon, i see USB to ATPI bridge then...
My externals (have many) shows as Z:/external below , bridge....
if not , USB is failing.
yes, ding dong, yes Icon, yes see drive above.!

then go to disk manager, type those 2 words in the run box.
start +run " disk manager"
CP(controlpanel)+computer management +disk management.
does disk manager see this spinning drive.
mine shows,. DISK 2 and is letter coded Z:
if not , the USB port is not working. or the drive is not with power.
if disk manager shows the drive, the assign a letter to said drive
now program manager can see the drive, with this letter Z.
it dont need to be Z , per ce\' but that letter is a nice flag.
step by step.

oops it has green tech, that means it goes to sleep.
make sure you turn that off first. or it may not show up at all.
it\'s so green its , invisible?

wd on their DL page has a spin down utility, use that.

My book doesn't have power

Did you plug it in?

USB Powered Devices:

If you're using USB for power then you either need a powered USB hub or the device must connect directly to the computer's USB port bypassing the hub.

If the USB hub doesn't plug in to the wall socket then it is not a powered hub. Basic USB hubs do not supply power to devices or charge an external device like a cell phone. The hub must be of the powered variety and plug into the wall before you can use it for things like this.

TIP:
Get two USB hubs, one powered and one not. If you're using a USB hub for anything other than connecting a flash drive or your wireless keyboard and mouse receiver, get a powered one. Doing so allows you to charge multiple devices through USB and it will provide power to other peripherals like a laptop cooling pad, external hard drives, etc.

try to test it on other computer or laptop... if the unit are still exist maybe your problem would be the external drive..there are no switch button on it, because most of the switches are located on the adapter, the only testing you could do is to test it to other unit..If the external drive are ok once after you test from other PC's, then might as well check your USB port by plugging-in to other port...or try to use other power supply on your computer, co'z sometimes the supply can no longer supplied any voltage coming from your external drive once it plug-in..

I have a 1 TB SimpleDrive external USB drive. The drive is now making a repeating, beeping noise, slow and methodical, and it is not recognized by either my MAC or my pc. WHat does the beep-beep-beep mean...

The hard disk inside it doesn't responds to the controller - hardware failure, the disk has failed.
Nothing can fix that, your unit is truly dead and you need a new one.

Assuming you don't hear any activity it might be the power supply that has died. Check if it's under any warrant.. if not you can always rescue the hard drive by taking it out of the enclosure and plugging it into your PC. Odds are it's a SATA drive. Either way.. taking it out of the enclosure will rule out of it's the hard drive or the components. Good luck.

My 1 tb WD hard drive isn't even being recognized

If the 1 tb is spinning up, which I assume it is, the new PC (assuming a Win 7 OS) should see it and mount a driver to be able to talk with it. I would double check all my connections at the drive and the PC, try different USB ports just in case one is dead.

Restart the compuetr and try again. be sure that the USB cord to the external HD is NOT plugged in when the computer restarts until Windows has been loaded completely.
You can also try a different USB cable and a different USB port on your laptop

Simple Tech external memory 1.0 tb not registering all the sudden

Hello,

First of all make sure that the USB port that you are using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0 port, and not USB 1.0.

Also if it came with an external power, connect it to the external power before putting on your PC.

This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore might not be enough to power up your USB Drive.

After making sure about this, power up your system, and plug the external drive, then Right-Click on my computer icon, select manage, then go to Disk Management Option.

On the Disk management option Page you should see ALL the drives installed on your system, including the hidden ones, so what you will just do is, try and locate the one representing your external drive, and right click on it. then select "Change Drive letter and Paths".

Give the drive any new, unique letter (i.e alphabet) different from the ones already on your system, and click on OK.

This should make your external Drive to be detected automatically.

Hope this helps you out.
Goodluck!
