I/O Device Error on External Hard Drive

Hello,
I few months back I got an external hard drive. TOday, I am getting and error that the drive is not accessible due to an I/O device error. I have power to the drive. Does anyone know what this error is or how to fix it?

    I bought a Western Seagate 1Tb external hard drive only yesterday, and I stored 200Gb last night. This morning it was working fine, however I came home this afternoon after work to work on sorting out folders etc on it, and it won't read, it's freezing up, and reporting an i/o error when trying to access the drive. I'm running Windows Vista, help!! I've already deleted the files off my pc because I thought I was doing the smart thing backing them up to my hard drive :(

    I have the same problem. I purchased a Western Digital Elements external hard drive. I transferred several files from my internal hard drive to the external. Now I can not access the files on the external. drive. I am getting an E/O Device error.

    I desperately need help as the files are my 2008 tax records!

Try doing a disk check on it

1 hold down the windows key and press r
2 type in cmd
3 in the shell window type in chkdsk /F /X e:
Replace the E: with your harddrive letter

    Does the hard drive have to be pluged in when u do this..?? Only when i plug in my maxtor 500g it freazes the PC..!!

Only my pc freazes when i plug in my maxtor 500g...I have been trying to solve this problem on my brothers iqon pc now for some time..!! It doesnt access my brothers western HD ither. It used to but then just stoped finding it for some reason..

I had the same problem and could not access any files on a Maxtor external hard drive - I plugged the drive into an old laptop running Windows 98 (1st edition) and could access all of them !!

Hi there,

Go into Control Panel/System/Device Manager and look for yellow exclamation marks. Delete any you find. Reboot your computer. Connect the external hard drive and turn it on. Let Windows discover it. If it asks for the driver, put in the CD that came with the drive.

Troubleshooting your computer can help rule out common problems and the possibility that the hard drive may be defective. If you recently purchased the device and suspect there is something wrong with it, return the defective drive to SimpleTech or the reseller for a replacement. Incompatible USB Port Problems SimpleTech SimpleDrive plug and play options makes it easy for you to connect the device to your computer. But you may encounter problems if your computer's USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports are not compatible with the external hard drive. Make sure your ports are powerful enough to operate the drive. IO error


The message "The Request Could Not Be Performed Because of an I/O Device Error" appears when Windows is unable to read the data on a storage device.


If this error message appears when attempting to access the files on an input/output

(I/O or IO) device, such as an external hard drive, the file system on the drive could be damaged, the drive could be infected with a virus or the data connector inside the device enclosure could have come loose.


If troubleshooting the drive fails to fix the IO device error, formatting the drive might repair the device.

Connect the external hard drive to the computer.


Run an antivirus program.


Click the "Scan" tab or button, then click "Custom."

Uncheck all items in the list except for the drive letter assigned to the external drive.


Click "OK." Click "Scan" or "Scan Now" to run a virus scan on the hard drive.

Quarantine or remove any infections the virus scanner detects.


Click "Start." Input "cmd.exe" into the search field.

Press "Enter" to open Command Prompt. Input "chkdsk <drive>: /f /r" into Command Prompt.


Replace "<drive>" with the letter assigned to your external hard drive.

Press "Enter" to run CheckDisk on the drive.


CheckDisk will search for and repair detected errors or bad sectors.


Burn the files on the external hard drive to a set of DVDs or move the files to another drive, if possible.

If the IO device error reappears when attempting to move the files, disconnect the external hard drive from the computer.


Remove the power adapter from the drive.

Remove the screws securing the faceplate to the drive or from the edge of the enclosure. Insert the edge of a small, flathead screwdriver in between either side of the enclosure to wedge both sides apart.


Check the connections to the drive.

Confirm that the IDE or SATA interface is plugged into the back of the drive.


Reassemble the external hard drive, reconnect the power adapter and reconnect the drive to the PC.


Attempt to access the files on the drive.

If the IO device error reappears, return to Command Prompt. Input "format /fs:fat32 <drive>:" into the command-line prompt.


Replace "<drive>" with the letter assigned to the external hard drive.


Press "y" when the message "Proceed with Format (Y/N)?" appears.

The process will format the drive, erasing all data on the disk.


If the drive still fails to function after format, you will need to replace the drive.

Got a Sumvision External 2.5 Hard drive for over a year now and today i pluged it in as normal and got the following error messages - using windows 7 also tried it in XP and it doesnt recongise the hard...


Hook up that external hard drive to another computer that you know for sure the USB ports work properly. If you still get the same error message or the drive is not recognized then that means the hard drive is bad.

If the hard drive is recognized properly and you can access the files then that means its an issue with the operating system.

Hello sir/ma'am, hi, most likely you have cable problems, check and see if you can find another cable. The cable is the USB data cable, that connects from your PC to the external hard drive.
Please also check if your USB port is working fine, just simply plug in a thumb drive to confirm.
If its not the cable, its the external hard drive. Usually, the red light appears or the device is reading the drive continuously with no action. let me know your progress.

Toshiba Hard Drive Crash


Hi,
if the datas aleady deleted, then you have nothing to lose. Right ?
What you need is a 2.5 to 3.5 inch IDE ribbon cable connector.
this will enable you to put the drive into an IDE slot on the PC internal motherboard ( primary/secondary )
Unless it,s already 3.5"
boot the computer, see if it recognises the drive. And format it.
then you may be able, to re-fit back into the external casing, and use as an external again.
