Cleaning the sensor often works as well. A slightly damp cloth followed by a dry cloth should do the the trick.

The problem is the "spot sensor" that resides on the side of the carriage assembly. It shoots out a ray of light on to the paper when the paper is fed into the printer for printing. It tells the machine..."Hey...there's paper there, start printing". If this sensor is not working properly you will get the error that you are receiving. Most of the time the light still comes on but the sensor board cannot process. You will need to replace the spot sensor of which we have many of....There is a thin plastic piece on the right side of the carriage that covers this sensor. It removes easily so you can see what i'm talking about. Its very easy to replace as well.

The paper type is probably not set to "plain" in the printers menu.
