How do I wire a fan motor and the two associated capacitors to make it run? I was given a Hunter Model 26136 ceiling fan motor and the two capacitors that came with it: 1st a two wire (red & black) 5F 250vac VCE 74132-01 and 2nd a four wire (green, brown and two gray wires) GY 5GR 5B 250 VAC VCE74133-01. Also I know I need to buy a 3 speed switch. I have no idea how to wire the motor, capacitors and switch together. John Bierke

You almost have it Look closer at the run capacitor. It has Herm, this is for the compressor, Com or C and F or Fan.

1 of your power wires is the fan speed so connect them accordingly usually black is hi, blue med, & red is low. You are "feeding" voltage to the selector switch on 1 side and coming out to the fan motor speeds.

Next you have a "Common" wire on your fan motor (this means its Common to all the other connections inside the fan motor to me. It is usually white. Connect this to the other line of power usually the Com on the capacitor unless it connects to a strip on the selector switch. But 1 of these 2 places will be the other side of your Power when plugged in. Lastly the brown it is usually the fan capicator only wire and it will connect to the fan "F" terminal on the capicator this terminal will not have any other wires connected to it.

Motor Wiring
Old Motor
Brown wire is Start
Yellow wire is run or Power
Black wire is High Speed or Common
The other two taps are speed taps, but you have a single speed application
And high speed is what you need ,that’s why there’s not any wires
on Red and Blue if high speed was to much then you would move the
Black wire to one of the other taps RED low speed or Blue Medinm speed
New Motor
White goes to the Yellow wire from the capacitor
Black goes to the Black wire you took off of high speed on old motor
Of course both Brown wires go to the capacitor and Green to ground
If a capacitor doesn’t discharge it doesn’t mean it’s bad
but the capacitors don’t last as long as they used.
Any time you put in a new motor always replace the capacitor
It will save you a lot of time and grief later on.

There should be a wiring diagram on the back of the access panel. If you can't read it, check online for model wiring diagram. Don't guess, you may cause more expensive damage.

Before attempting any of these recommendations, First disconnect all the power sources and check your wiring diagrams on the motor and condensing unit.
On the old capacitor if you look on the top near each of the three terminals. Are they marked, fan - C - herm? If they are that is a dual capacitor and that needs to stay because that is also your compressor capacitor.
The Red wire from the conductor is Run and it's connected to C on the old capacitor.
Follow the Yellow wire and see if it goes to the S or start terminal on the compressor, if it does then that is the Start wire for your compressor and it connects to herm on the capacitor.
For the fan motor a lot of times the wiring connections are printed on the motor label.
Check the label, Purple should be run and connect to C on the old capacitor.
Black should be Common and it connects to the opposite side of the contactor as the Red wire. If the Red wire connects to T1 then the Black wire connects to T2.
The Brown wire shoud be the start wire on the fan motor and it connects to the Fan terminal on the old capacitor.
Now if you want to use the new fan capacitor. Take the Purple wire from the motor and look for any marks (red paint or a dash) on or beside the terminals on the new capacitor. If there is an identifying mark then connect the Purple wire to that terminal, if no marks you can connect it to either terminal. Then you need a jumper wire from C on the old capacitor to the purple side of the new capacitor. Then take the brown wire and connect it to opposite terminal of the new capacitor.

Hunter fan remote bypass


This fan uses a "ballast" to run the fan. The ballast (part #272) probably contains wiring for multiple speeds. Here is a manual that discusses the wiring- http://www.hunterfan.com/SupportDocuments/OwnersManuals/42700.pdf.
To use a wall mounted fan dimmer, you need to identify the high speed wires and connect them to the dimmer switch. This method will bypass the other speed windings and is not as power efficient.

Fan works on high and low ok but in medium it runs at low speed.


Sounds like the speed control switch has been replaced recently, or one of the capacitors in the black brick in the switch housing has failed. Most modern fans use a double capacitor for medium and low. High is wired straight across the run capactor (which is usually 2 wire by itself, or all three capacitors may be in one big black brick)

The symptoms you describe suggest that the speed capacitor has failed. Typically they are 5+5MFD, or two in one case On Medium both 5MFD capacitors are activated, but on low only one is activated. The capacitors serve as a "choke" that limits the amount of current getting to the motor (not voltage, but amperage)

Find out the manufacturer of the fan and if it is Hunter, their number is 1-901-745-9222. Tell them the model# of your fan and they shall get you hooked up with a new cap.

Hunter 3 speed ceiling fan now turns slowly


Probably a bad capacitor. What model is it? If it completely wireless (in other words: no pull chains for light or fan) the capacitor is located on the receiver for the fan (in the canopy or the lower switch housing). Unless you are handy with a soldering iron, it is easier to purchase a replacement receiver.
