Assuming you have two hard drives installed in your computer, when you save a document, in the drop down list at the top of the save window, click on D:, then select a folder where you would like to save the file.

However, if you do not have two hard drives, then your D: is usually the recovery partition. Windows will not allow anything to be saved to this partition.

If this is the case your best bet would be to format your hard drive and reinstall windows.

If your cd drive is full you should move media files like movies and music to the D drive. Just drag the files from the folders on C drive to your D drive. You should make folders on the D drive so you can keep things organized. It's critical to get a nice chunk of free space back on the C drive. If the operating system is installed on the C drive it will run slow when the drive is too full. You may also want to start archiving files on burnable media such as cd or dvd or place files on an external hard drive.

Computer d drive full

Yes its always recommended to keep at least a minimum of 20% of total drive space as empty for lag free performance.
you will need to delete unwanted files on the drive to create some space else the computer would start running slow as the drive becomes full.
Please let me know if you have any other queries.

C drive is almost full, but there is no way i have 144GB of data on this drive. i cannot find where all this space is being used,

Have you emptied your recycle bin lately? How big is your swap file? Have you defragmented the hard drive lately? All of these things eat hard drive space. System restore pojnts take up space. Every security update installed is cached in a hidden directory. If you hoard your email, your pst file can get huge.

What does your computer currently have?
Operating System?
Amount of RAM?
Speed of CPU (Central Processing Unit)?
Size of disk-drive?
Percentage-full of disk-drive?
Manufacturer/model of video-card?
How many "empty" slots that could hold RAM?

My d drive is full

Hello caliandrew88,
Having a full D Drive will not cause Vista to crash. If you need to free up space then get an external hard drive to move files off of your machine.

C Drive

There are 2 reasons for this. Either your drive is really full or it could be a filesystem glitch.

I would recommend a free program called "Space Monger" to give you a visual representation on what is filling up your hard drive.

If it is a filesystem problem, you need to run chkdsk. I recommend this periodically even when you are not having problems. Go to Start, Run, type in "cmd" and hit OK, type in "chkdsk C: /r /f" and hit enter on the keyboard to run a full hard drive check. This will require you to reboot your computer. Sit back, that will take a little while.

Hope this helps!
