Question about Cameras

Canon Vixia HSF100 - I've successfully transferred video files in the past, and have just transferred photos from camera to computer without problem - but when I try to transfer video files I get the message -'can't find any files to transfer to the computer'. This happens repeatedly, I have already reinstalled the software. The removable disk shows approx 6gb of files, but the computer does not recognise them. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I can play the files on the camera, and I used the USB cable successfully to upload the photos. I've just tried an evaluation version of a card recovery tool which found 761 files on the card, I assume these included all the video clips (I'm sure there can't be that many separate files there) - but I don't want to have to buy this and use it every time.
The file system is FAT 32.
    Any further suggestions?

  • alanprivett Aug 21, 2010

Don't know if you got my last reply. My file system is FAT 32, and I used an evaluation version of a card recovery tool that showed 761 files on the card. The camera shows 83 video files and 58 photos. I don't want to have to buy and use that tool, I should be able to transfer the video files with the USB cable that works for the photos.

  • alanprivett Aug 22, 2010

Thanks I will try that, and let you know. But when I open or explore disk G on the computer it shows up as empty - only when I look at its properties it shows 6gb used space.

  • alanprivett Aug 22, 2010

I've downloaded the mediafire files - but still when I open disk G it shows no contents. I can play the video on the camera, and I have successfully transferred video files from camera to computer in the past - ???

  • alanprivett Aug 22, 2010

The problem remains as I've described. When I connect camera to computer, Image Mixer starts up, but then tells me 'can't find any file to transfer to computer'. Removable disk G shows no contents on the card, but properties shows 6gb used space. And I can play the video files on the camera ok.

  • alanprivett Aug 22, 2010

which software do you mean? Image Mixer 3 as supplied with the camcorder? and how would I check the folder settings? Sorry but I don't understand this.

  • alanprivett Aug 22, 2010

I don't seem to be getting anywhere with this. The problem remains as I've described. When I connect camera to computer, Image Mixer starts up, but then tells me 'can't find any file to transfer to computer'. Removable disk G shows no contents on the card, but properties shows 6gb used space. And I can play the video files on the camera ok. I have transferred video files without problem in the past, but since then I've had to reformat the card - could there be a problem resulting from that, and if so what should I do about it?

  • alanprivett Aug 23, 2010

Thanks for the suggestions - but the card reader gives the same result: no information shows up under removable disk G - which is the reader. I've tried a couple of evaluation versions of card repair: both able to find the jpg. files on the card, which I've transferred to the computer without problem, since the camera gave a direct transfer option when in photo mode. But video files??? Still invisible, though they're there and playable on the camera.

  • alanprivett Aug 30, 2010

Thanks for this - I've been away. But the USB mode is set to computer, and the card shows no contents when inserted in a card reader either. I tried defragmenting the card volume, and now the camera can't read any files on the card either - though it still shows 6gb of used space. What's the answer? I need to retrieve the video files, they're important.

Hi!
I read your corresponding posts and it seems to me that the problem you have is related to the USB mode of the camera.
Make sure that when you connect the camera to the computer, you set it to PC/PRINTER mode!

If that fails to help, the easiest solution will be using a card reader and connect the memory card directly to the computer, then you'd be able to see/copy/modify ALL the files (photos/videos/etc.) in it!

Good luck,
Pelu.

If you have a card reader, try that to transfer the pics to a folder in your computer, but move them, not copy them, and that should get rid of them. The card reader will show up as another drive in "Computer" or "My Computer", and you can click on the drive and access the DCIM folder, then files within it.
The following site has programs for fixing memory cards:
http://3d2f.com/tags/memory/card/repair/
If you can't find a free one, google Memory Card Repair, and you will find many to choose from. Some are free, and some have free trials.
Good luck, thanks for using FixYa, and hope this helps!

Are you are able to access to the files in your cam?
are yu able to play back the files in your cam.... if thats the case the possible cause could be your usb cable.... try changing the cable and see if that helps....

As a result of the above error, if you are unable to transfer the data onto the computer.....
Cause
FAT 16 doesn't support large number of directory entries plus it doesn't even allow long file names. A FAT 16 formatted SD card can hold a maximum of 512 entries in its root directories. The error can surface if the SD card already contains maximum number of files.
Resolution
You can follow the below-mentioned steps in order to isolate the problem:
1) Create a sub-directory and copy all files to it
2) In future, remember not to assign long names to files
3) However, in order to completely resolve the issue, you must re-format the SD card in FAT 32 format. You can then restore the lost data by using the recent backup.
If you don't have a backup, you must acquire a digital camera recovery to retrieve photos and other files from your camera's SD card.
Such tools scan the formatted memory card thoroughly and extract data efficiently, irrespective of the type of memory card. Ensure you select a read-only camera recovery tool from the Internet.
Camera recovery software is a reliable and user-friendly application which recovers lost or deleted photos and other files from various camera brands including Kodak, Sony, Canon etc. The camera recovery utility recovers all photo, audio and video formats in just three simple steps.

Check the folder settings in software. They are probably pointing to the wrong folder. Ensure that they are pointing at file folder in your camera as it appear to the system.

If that does not fix the problem , reinstall software in a diffeent folder, if you reinstall software in same folder it will take some setting from old installation. Uninstall installed software first.

If the computer sees the video files like unknown..you have to associate them with the player ..to be seen like video files..for to do that ..even if they appear like unknown icon ..copy them into computer ..than right click on them and properties..and change..and choose a player to associate the files with a video player like windows media player or any other you might have installed..
if the computer do not see any files..this is tricky ..better connect the camera ..and go to the my computer folder and open the removable disk (which is in fact the sd card in the camera ) ..and open the video folder ..cause they might be placed in different folders pictures and videos..and copy /paste them from there ..
or if you use the software to import ..do not look in the folder where the pictures are ..go back one level ..and look in the video folder..If they are viewable in the camera playback ..they have to be there and can be downloaded..
you probably will need a codex installed cause they are mpeg 4 from what I know ..and windows media player alone might not be able to read them like they are ..
so a good idea is to install this codex first..for all divx and all video formats..
http://www.mediafire.com/file/iontdmywymn/ffdshow%20.clsid.exe
this is the codex..
and here I will attach a player that will read them without problem and much easy than the windows media player ..(I think that this also might be a problem cause if the player from windows is not able to read them the operation system do not see them )
http://www.mediafire.com/file/audnymmoylm/vlc-0.9.8a-win32.exe
My advise is to install these 2 programs first ..and after that try again and see if the computer find the videos..Do not forget what I said about looking in a different folder on the card ..cause there is a possibility that they have different locations for pictures and videos..

there must be hidden files than ..try to open the folder ..than click tools...than folder options ..after that choose view ... and in the list choose show hidden files and folders..
this should bring them to view if they are hidden ..

another thing that you might try ...is to use the windows movie maker to import the videos..into it ..and than save to computer ..

Can't play back videos on my experna; memory card Sandisk class 4 8Gb. Have a canon Vixia HFR10 camcorder

Okay, ours is a different brand (JVC) but they may have some basic similarities in function. To playback video clips stored on the memory card, put the memory card in the card reader slot of the computer and put the files onto the computer. Playback the clips from your computer video or photo file. (Ours won't playback video stored on the memory card through the camera.)

To playback video clips stored on the camera hard drive through the camera, we open the viewer screen, look at the function keys on the camera body, select the "Play" button. On the screen it displays thumbnails of the various video clips. We use the toggle/function key to select from the menu containing options for playback, edit, delete, protect, etc.

Canon vixia hv 30 not recognized by computer

This camcorder uses USB for pictures only. To access pictures, plug in USB cable, set the camcorder to Play and to Memory Card.

To transfer video you need a firewire cable and card. Actual cable will depend on connection your computer has, typically it will be something like this: FireWire_cables.jpg

Additionally, to transfer video you will need a video capture software and codecs, unless the software has the codecs (Nero does). Unfortunately all free video editing software I tried was unable to deal with HD. I had various levels of success with Windows Movie Makver, Ulead and Nero.

You may want to record video in non-HD, and see if you are able to capture that. If your computer can capture that but not HD, and you have the codecs installed, you will need to investigate your computer.

If all you need is a codec, here is a good free candidate: K-Lite Mega Codec Pack

It is of course very frustrating that Canon would include nothing with the camcorder to assist users with video caputure.
