Over time the cartridge acquire a lot of dust and are also dropped and damaged. Try blowing into the cartridge to clear out the dust and if that does not work there may be issues with the processor inside. If the game does not work at all try going to your local exchange store, you may be able to find the game for between 5 and 15 dollars. So sorry if this is the case I know the game is tough and time consuming!

Is it mandatory to have a memory in the psp for the mcqueen orama race game

If your auto save is ON it is mandatory to save your game progress. you can turn off auto save if you don't want it that way. However, you will still need the memory card to save your progress manually.

Whats happened is you have started from a new game while an existing save was there. There is no way to save your current progress, however the origional save will still be there. You can either turn it off and start again from the previous save (by selecting the top option at the first menu) or if you want to start right from the begining and be able to save you will need to delete the old save file. I believe the reason for this was that so many kids losts their game that may have taken month (or years) of playing by a friend or sibbling trying to play the game from the start and then save - which would delete the other game save.

My progress is not saving on Professor Layton

i had this problem and then I realised that when you click save, you then need to select which file you want to save (generally in your own name) it will then pop up with "progress saved" - simply selecting save is not enough
