Question about Stihl Garden

1 Answer

I have three Stihl chainsaws, MS-180C, MS-250C and MS-390, on the 180 and 390 when I start them with full choke, when they start it runs at 3/4 speed and the choke has gone to half open and it stays there. I squeeze the throthle to full and let go thinking it will go to idle but it doesn't and its still running at 3/4 speed, the choke is still half closed and I can't slow it to idle. The only way I can stop the saw is to push it to choke and flood it to stop. What's the problem? Greg gam2451@yahoo.com

Sounds like a throttle linkage problem

    Have someone check out your master switch. If they know stihl they will know what a master is. There is a spring that gets bent and worn and stops making contact. that could be why it wont shut off. also you may have to adjust your throttle cable and set carb properly to make it idle

SOURCE: Poulon Wildthing 18" Gas Chain Saw

Some Poulans vent thru a fuel line going from the tank to the carburetor. Some vent thru the cap but eventually the duck bill valve starts leaking fuel. Then I suspect some people change that cap to one without a vent, which causes the problem you are describing.

SOURCE: Fuel line for Stihl 025 chainsaw

Hi

It happens sometimes.You have to replace the fuel line.This is a trick.Remove the gas tank cap and take off the fuel line and remove the fuel filter.Take off the fuel line from the gas tank.Cut off the piece of the fuel line wich is larger and seals the gas tank.Now through that piece of fuel put an ordinary fuel but about the same diameter.Put all back and that is all you have to do.If you need farther info just let me know. best regards savumihai71

OK - let's work through this. If you need choke all the time then the mixture is too weak when the choke is off. Putting the choke on literally chokes off the air supply to the engine by lowering a small shutter across the entrance to the carburettor. That means either there is too much air getting to the engine (don't see how!!) or too little fuel. So, how do we get too little fuel? You could check for this as follows;
- before we do anything tricky let's check the obvious things - is there a fresh fuel mix in the tank? Petrol does go off, especially if there is 2 -stroke oil added to it. If it's over a month old from the pump mix up a fresh batch. Is the idle speed set too low so the engine stalls when the choke is knocked off? You can see this screw to one side of the carburettor (you need to remove the top lid in front of the handle on the chain saw, and then remove the air filter to see it). Turn the screw half a turn clockwise to speed the engine up. Be warned - if the engine starts it will run faster than normal and that means the chain may start to spin around. Also - check that the chain brake is off (i.e. the safety lever is pulled backwards, and that the chain is free to move BEFORE you attempt to start)
- is the fuel filter blocked? To get to this, make a wire hook (e.g. thick fuse wire) and gently hook out the fuel filter that's sitting at the bottom of the fuel tank, and take a look at it (be gentle - you can damage the gauze if you are clumsy). Does the gauze look clear? I.e. if you dip it into petrol it will freely run into the filter and of course drain out when you lift it? If not, replace it.
- next stop - are the jets in the carburettor set right? I don't have a service manual for this (and I know the manual says unhelpfully "return for service") but basically you will have seen two holes on the side of the chain saw (below the handle) two small 0.8cm holes; one marked 'L' (for low speed) and the other 'H' (for high). Put a fine flat screwdriver down the L hole and feel for the slot of the low speed jet. Once engaged turn it out half a turn and this will enrich the mixture - if this seems to help and you can start the engine then adjust the L jet in or out until the engine is idling comfortably. If it idles too quickly then you can also turn down the idle screw (see previous paragraph).
- no luck still? Well, it could be fuel pump or a blocked jet in the carburettor but this really is a 'return to the service centre' task!

Good luck!

SOURCE: Stihl MS 260 Pro wont run wide open or idle.

Hi brandon First change the sparkplug with the same heat range,Check and clean the gas filter with compressed air.Remove the carb and very carefully disassembly entirely.Check the gaskets and the diafragms.At the fuel pump side there is a fine screen(clean it).Check the needle,the spring and lever.Unlock the screws L and H(note how many turns are they).Put the corp of the carb in a special clean solution for 12 hours and then clean it with compressed air(something is clogged there).Put all back together and try to start the engine. regards savumihai71

SOURCE: removing handlebar on stihl ms 270 chainsaw

you have to take the top cover off of the engine and then remove the tab that holds the bushing in place alongside the engine. if you just start prying on the plastic plug from the outside of the handle you will damage the retainer. that holds it in place. If you have already done this, there is a solution.

Stihl ms 210. Starts ok revs fast then cuts out. Have to re start on full choke then run fast again on 1/2 choke and again stops after 2-3 seconds.

you have an air leak causing the unit to run to fast. The air leak is also over powering the flow of fuel causing it to die. Hopefully you have not tried running it repeatedly like this or you may have done severe internal damage due to running it to lean

Stihl fs 86

I am a Stihl mechanic. We tell all our customers that the proper starting procedure for a Stihl is as follows. Turn on the switch. Set the choke lever to full choke. Prime the primer bulb three times(if it has one) and pull the pull rope NO MORE THAN THREE TIMES with the choke on. If the unit has not tried to start after the third pull, open the choke lever and pull till it starts. Sthil carburetors are notorious for flooding after pulling the rope more than three times on choke.

Thanks;
George

Check your fuel filter in case it is clogged. When starting pull cord on full choke 5 times quickly. Wait 2 or 3 seconds...try again if it asks like it wants to start..then put on 1/2 choke...goes thru same process. Check spark plug.
