Hi.

Possible faults causing the problem are either a frozen damper fan blades, broken damper motor or a defective defrost system.

If there is no air circulation then problem is likely frozen fan blades, less commonly faulty damper motor. The defrost system may still be responsible, as this fault is often confused with air circulation problem (see below).

If the fault is given by frozen fan blades you will get rid of the problem by simply performing a full defrost (leave unit off overnight).

If the problem is the defrost system, a defrost may temporarily fix the problem, but the fridge will stop cooling again as soon as ice build up comes back, usually after days or weeks from defrost.

The function of the defrost system, located at the back of the freezer firewall, is to prevent condenser coils at the back of the fridge from cooling down and icing up. When the defrost system is defective you get poor cooling, particularly in the fridge section.

You can test if the problem is the defrost system by leaving the unit disconnected or off for 24 or 48 hours.

As said, if problem was the defrost system, then the problem will disappear after full defrost, to come back in a couple of weeks.

Other problems that can cause insufficient cooling are compressor problems, refrigerant leaks, and depending on the model, electronic control faults.

Start doing a defrost for 12 or 24 hours. Cross fingers and hope that the problem was fan blades frozen. You can follow the general troubleshooting illustrated here (the article refers to a different fridge, a Whirpool built Kenmore model, things are not too different on your Hotpoint):Kenmore side by side...

Right side cannot get cold enough even at the highest settings

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

My GE side by side refrigerator isn't working right. The freezer works great, but I can't get any coldness on the refrigerator side. Even at the highest cold setting.

Check your air door at the top left rear of your refrigerator side. If no air is flowing try opening it by hand while you are there. Also check the freezer for a fan sound to be sure your fan isnt stuck or dead.

Freezer keeps frosting up and fridge doesn't get cold enough

Your defrost system isn't working. Check your defrost heater, defrost thermostat. http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php If they are OK the problem is the electronic control. Part 32 on this diagram. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/sect/i/2/w/i2wajbeu9f.gif

Both firdge and freezer on level 5 and still not very cold

It may just need more freon. A service call won't cost the landlord too much, and then he will have a report from a qualified third party, if the fridge needs to be replaced.

Kenmore refrigerator won't cool, but freezer does.

by closing that small door you are starving the refrig of cold air . you should be getting a heavy whisper of air through that door. place all controls in the middle position, close the freezer door and check for airflow through that vent.
