Question about HP Compaq Presario SR1630NX PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have a compaq sr1630nx and I was experiencing problems programs would not execute and my virus would shut off upon execution. I replaced the HD and took out the memory and battery. I replaced the memory with the orig 512mb installed xp sp3 and all is fine. HOWEVER, when reinstalling anything beyond the original 512mbthe system states that Norton has been disabled. When I remove the additional memory all is well. Additionally, this behavior is exhibited with 2 or 4 DIMMS with three different sets of DIMMS..256mb, 512mb and 1024mb? All memory is PC3200 ...CONFUSED in Chicago.

Don't be hatin', but IMHO saying goodbye to Norton is a good thing. They never have gotten it right. Would use the FREE version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, (Cnet), and the FREE CCleaner. (A registry cleaner) Problems have occurred with Microsoft's Service Pack 3, and Norton. IMHO the problem is probably Norton, although SP/3 has messed up a lot of good installs of other programs. I run the free version (From Cnet.com), of Malwarebytes, and use CCleaner. I'll put them up against ANY version of Norton, any day. Notice I posted this as a Clarification, and Not a Solution.

Get malwarebytes from malwarebytes, never cnet, they infect it.
here is the only safe source, the maker,
https://www.malwarebytes.com/
gee.... why must i say that.... sad no>?

get rid of norton (its horrid buy Eset)
and XP is dead now for 3 years, why run that? its a virus magnet?
run linux, on old slow dogs like this.
memory is complex.
sw when did you get those Dimms, 10 years ago or yesterday
when did it go from 1 to 4. and now, and what brand and number.

let me guess, its the wrong memory. I bet.
finding good memory in 2017 for such an old pc is not easy
in fact its hard to buy, and if you find it, its sold by scalpers.
used, memory.
the memory must match the needs of that OLD CPU
and or its mmc controller, that be a hard cold fact.
and no PC now uses that old memory, why not buy a PC that is 10 years and newer and ovoid fixing and dumping cash on any XP puter made>? be super wise that.....
the pC is 2005 years. 12 years old.
it runs a Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 GHz
came with 2x 256mb sticks. new, and are special.
4 gigs max, 4x1
PC3200 MB/sec
the PC is a Presario (key name to find mem)
but wait there is a DT and LT Presario, must I guess that too?>
ill answer desktop DT.
the top maker is KINGSTON, and they stopped making DDR2.

does that new memory show up in BIOS?
does it pass the BIOS memory checks?
i bet not.
but get rid of norton. youne

all you said was norton dies, with excess memory
nor what else works with full memory, what works and not works
is key to all diagnosis.
you do know norton sux, and will charge you 50bucks to reactivate it right?
not only that but norton is very heard to remove back when./
I use pro grade, RevoInstaller, to kill things like this.
next time post what works with full memory.

if your memory worked for years, say so.... we cant guess
what happened when nor what upgrades done when
sorry

    you replaced the HDD,
    that be empty'
then installed XP, from what disks/
    we cant guess that either,
    HP
    or
    MS.
    ????
only the drivers from HP work on this LT.
    so only HP disk work.
KICK Norton off this PC, (is it desk or lap top Presario)
Norton is Infamous, and well deserved,.
SP3 must be loaded, and all updates. (oops be gone at MS)
XP will be a virus magnet, no stopping it.
it gets infected at the drop of a hat.!@
    XP is dead.
XP does nto operate USB devices, of huge magnitude. (vast) NOW.
XP is not supported now b most hardware device makers, due to above.
the best question (answered) on here
    was
why run XP, why not Linux. on OLD DOGS.

  • Anonymous Apr 22, 2017

took out LT large battery (not coin)?
    yes?
so is a Presario SR1630 LAPTOP but you posted to Desktop.forum. ok,, a challenge to all.
    oops.
    so here is the deal.
I bet, you have a LT.
and had HP disks, and installed fresh HP XP
    right? (details matter no?)
    then found norton borked,
sure it will its 12 years, old how can it ever work now.. unless you buy it new.!
get rid if norton is the cure. (tiny of all XP ills)
next is Service pack 3, guess what?,.no sp3 12 long years ago.
    SP3 was 2008, 3 years latter.
it is mandatory SP3. and all updates.

so get SP3, good luck XP is 3 years dead.
then get all updates, same answer. how?

No more confused person exists than someone, using XP, in 2017... and worse every day forward. for a fact.
    compelled to Do gobsmacks sure.
    put on ESET.
google it , its #1 from Germany.
but why do that. why spend all that cash
buy a used LT far newer? "Goodwill has em"

    with Windows 7 on it.
be 10x better to do that than sink cash and labor in to any XP pig.

BTW, I have 2 old HP LT (circa 2001)
    both run perfectly
    and on XP
    but nether have internet,allowed.
they run special software that I own, that only runs on XP, (expensive software$$$)
so I do know how to make XP work, but not in the internet, that be , crazy risky.
I even have XP slip streamed disks that load
XP and every update ever made.
including the full set of HP, drivers, SP12345.exe
XP is dead, in the USA, its now showing at
1% in USA< and falling fast.
as HDD die, owners dont spend $100 on $5 LT do they. so its parked in the attic, or landfill.

I see in countries running pirated XP
africa and china , 11% usage. still
for them no sympathy here.stolen they are.
    tell more get more.

    remove norton,
do a clean install using HP disks.
then put on Eset and malware-bytes-free.
using only the original memory sticks.
    then add memory correct memory.,
keep in mind finding old style memory is hard.
keep in mind many of of those old processors
just hate the new high density chips
    (fails hard)

adding memory on old systems is never easy
ask how. (we can show you the exact rules, if tell me your exact processor, running)
one chip that hate new memory is intel i5 (old)
the MMC inside it is horrible.

Hi!

Please check for the cables coming into the motherboard from the power supply. Also try and check for any loose cables.

If that doesn't help then please get your power supply changed as its faulty.

Please rate this solution.

Thanks to Microsoft Knowledge Base for help with my answer:

First, find out what the maximum amount of memory is. This is generally listed by most of the manufacturers. This will let you know what upgrade potential the system has. Next, determine how the memory configuration is when you buy the system. For example, a laptop that has 2GB of memory can be configured as either a single 2GB module or two 1GB modules. The single memory module allows for better upgrade potential because by adding another module you are gaining more memory without sacrificing any current memory. Upgrading the two module situation with a 2GB upgrade would result in the loss of one 1GB module and a memory total of 3GB.

Master Boot Record

MBR Short for <i><b>M</b>aster <b>B</b>oot <b>R</b>ecord,</i> a small <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/P/program.html">program</a> that is executed when a computer <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/B/boot.html">boots up</a>. Typically, the MBR resides on the first <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/S/sector.html">sector</a> of the <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/H/hard_disk.html">hard disk</a>. The program begins the boot process by looking up the partition table to determine which <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/P/partition.html">partition</a> to use for booting. It then transfers program control to the <i>boot sector</i> of that partition, which continues the boot process. In <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/DOS.html">DOS</a> and <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/W/Windows.html">Windows</a> systems, you can create the MBR with the FDISK /MBR command. <br /> An <i>MBR virus</i> is a common type of <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/V/virus.html">virus</a> that replaces the MBR with its own code. Since the MBR executes every time a computer is started, this type of virus is extremely dangerous. MBR viruses normally enter a system through a <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/F/floppy_disk.html">floppy disk</a> that is installed in the <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/F/floppy_drive.html">floppy drive</a> when the computer is started up. Even if the floppy disk is not <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/B/bootable_diskette.html">bootable</a>, it can infect the MBR. <br />

What is virus and their description

A computer virus is a computer program that infects files, make changes in OS , file system , & edits registry to spread itself for furthur infection. They do it by putting their own code into the exe file & executes as a normal program & creates problems like deleting/hiding data, download programs from particular websites automatically, denial of service, formatting disk & much more.
Commonly we use the term virus for all types of malware, spyware.
A true virus can only spread from one computer to another (in some form of executable code)when its host is taken to the target computer; for instance because auser sent it over a network or the Internet, or carried it on aremovable medium such as a floppy,cd & USB drives(most chances).

How to Reduce Spreading of Virus on the Hard Drive

<b><u>An insight in VIRUS INFECTION and VIRUS SPREADING</u></b><br /> <br /> In today's computing spreading of virus is fast and very common.<br /> Even with an up to dated antivirus software the spreading of the virus infection is fast.<br /> This is because, we are not aware of how the virus spreads in our system.<br /> Once we know how the virus infects and spreads in our system then we will definitely reduce the risk, time and money spent.<br /> <br /> <b><u>Here is a short insight about viruses:</u></b><br /> <br /> 1) Virus is a small program code enabling it to to mingle or merge with other program codes.<br /> <br /> 2) The Virus Program Code is written such that it deletes data, corrupts data, steals data send it to the maker of the code, etc.<br /> <br /> 3) The virus cannot run on its own. It has to be executed just like other exe program files. That is why the autorun.inf file is required.<br /> <br /> <b><u>Now for an insight how we get infected:</u></b><br /> <br /> 1) Thorugh the internet: Usually when we browse any web site files are downloaded from the web server to our temporary internet folder(in windows) Then our Browser software reads the files and executes them in the browser window for us to view the web site.( If you are a website Designer you would understand this for others get an insight how internet browsers work), So when we are in the internet Virus files attach themself to the downloading files and enter our system in the temporary folder, From here they are executed by our browser software or when any program accesses the temporary folder.<br /> <br /> 2) Another one is we download a lot of data from the internet, we should be careful on what we are downloading because if the data downloaded is infected with virus then we are downloading the virus to our system along with the data, Don't download the data unless you are sure you could trust the maker of the data, program, etc.<br /> <br /> 3) From other medias like Flash Drive, CD's, DVD,s,etc.:<br /> We copy a lot of data to our computer from our friends and relatives, so if the data is already infected with virus we copy the virus to our system also, when we run os use the data the virus is executed along with it.<br /> <br /> <b><u>Now for an insight how Virus Spreads:</u></b><br /> <b></b> <br /> Just like any other program code the virus code has to be executed.<br /> That is why the virus merges with other exe's which are executable and not with the data file.<br /> <br /> For eg: a file with .avi, .dat, .3gp, etc. all these files are data files they dont execute, but they are used by exe files like wmplayer.exe, winamp.exe, vlplayer.exe, etc. The .avi .dat .3gp files are data files, the wmplayer.exe, winamp.exe vlplayer.exe are program files. Thus mostly exe program file get infected with virus.<br /> <br /> Usually when our system gets infected and any antivirus program cleans our system you can notice that the windows media player or winamp player or vlc media player does'nt work because it is removed or deleted by the antivirus for virus infection but the songs or video you saved is unharmed in the harddisk.<br /> <br /> That is why the virus code hangs or merges or infects mostly exe program files, So that it is executed along with the program file.<br /> <br /> So when you run an infected windows media player to play a song the virus code is also run along with the windows media player. Thus the virus is run again and again.<br /> <br /> There are hundreds of program files in the os for doing various tasks.<br /> we are going to look into just one program which the virus uses to spread itself in our system.<br /> <br /> The Program is non other than explorer.exe in windows. This program is needed to view or browse the data files stored in the hard disk.<br /> When we double click the My Computer Icon on the desktop the explorer.exe is executed which show you a window on your screen with the hard disk drives and cd dvd drives in the windows Now you can imagine how frequently you use the explorer.exe. You use it to view any data on the computer, even our desktop uses explorer.exe. This program is executed right when windows logs us on.<br /> <br /> When this program file is infected, it keeps on executing the virus each time we use the program. by this method the virus spreads fast to every parts of the hard disk.<br /> <br /> Likely there is a method to avoid executing the virus along with the explorer.exe each time we use it.<br /> <br /> When we double click any icon or object on our windows screen we execute the default command in the right click menu. Usually it is the Run Command. for eg: when you double click word the word.exe runs, similarly when we double click the my computer icon the default right menu option is <b>Open</b> which run the explorer.exe program.<br /> <br /> Instead of using this method to view files and data in our system we could use an alternate method which is using the explorer menu option when we right click my computer or right click the windows start button or in fact the explorer option is there whenever you right click any object on the screen.<br /> <br /> By using this explorer option in the right click you get a window with two panes one to the left and one to the right. In the left pane you have the directory structure showing all the directories and folders in our hard disk and in the right pane the content of the directory or folder selected in the left pane.<br /> <br /> Thus in this process we dont execute any code or program command when viewing the data in our hard disk. because we do not execute the explorer.exe more than once.<br /> <br /> So, Imagine how we reduce the spreading of virus by using this method.<br /> <br /> Say you have a file saved in your hard disk in this location<br /> <br /> <b>C:\data\monday\20-11-2010\office\media\todaysjob.doc</b><br /> <br /> If you want to open the file with word we will double click my computer, then double click C Drive, then Double Click data folder, then double click monday folder, then double click 20-11-2010 folder, then double click till you come to the media folder then you double click the todaysjob.doc which will execute the word.exe program which reads the data in the todaysjob.doc file and displays the content as required. In this process see how many time you will execute the virus, You will run the virus Seven Times.<br /> <br /> In our Alternate method You will run the Explorer.exe only once, Then on you just navigate to the media folder then double click the todaysjob.doc file in the right panel. So you execute the virus only once. <br /> <br /> Hence you reduce the spreading of VIRUS to a great extend.<br /> <br /> Good Luck, If there are any mistake please bare with me, I am not a good writer. If you have any Question Keep Me Posted.

Why do i keep getting DEP error message each time i close IE8 or a tab?

windows xp has DEP ( data execution prevention ) some viruses etc use that sort of technique and from SP2 onwards I believe it was they included it.

http://www.zensoftware.co.uk/kb/article.aspx?id=10002

Several OSs have no-execute or execute protection. Microsoft has added this as well in SP2 with data execution prevention (DEP). This precents code execution in memory regions already marked as storage. This is a powerful tool against buffer overrun exploits. If a program is failing and you want to disable DEP to see if that is the cause. Here are the steps. (Just disable DEP for the program in question… don’t disable it for your whole system.)
    1. Click Start
    2. Select Control Panel
    3. Select System
    4. Click the Advanced tab
    5. In the Performance region select Settings
    6. Click the Data Execute tab in the dialog box that opens
    7. Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select
    8. Click Add.
    9. The open dialog box will open. Browse and select your application.
    10. Click Open
    11. Click Apply
    12. Click Ok
    13. Reboot

Not clear images while surfing net on my laptop

Try downloading Mozilla Firefox and see if you have the same problem viewing images.

You can get it here: http://www.mozilla.com

I need more information to help you further on this...it may be that you need to install a plugin to view certain images.

The data execution problem could be from corrupted system files on your laptop or from a virus. If you're running Windows XP or Vista, download and run this program:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Make sure you let it download updates, then run a full scan.

If that does not resolve your data execution problem, try this tutorial:

Actually he is wrong the problem is a Virus or Spyware or similar bugs that you must;ve gotten through the Internet. I strongly recommend scanning your pc and getting them removed.

When I had this before my only solution was to wipe my pc and start over as the DEP or Data Execution Protection stopped most of my programs.

Annoying I know but this is why I say Microsoft should not have put the DEP in vista or made it able to be Disabled.
