SOURCE: 5 ton goodman ac unit

You MUST WEIGH IN THE NEW CHARGE OF R-22. There should be a label on the side of the a/c unit that states what the factory charge was. This is only a starting point. Once you have the factory charge in the system, then turn on the unit and allow it to stabilize (5 min) . Check pressure on low side and check teperature on low side pipe. Temperature of pipe should be 8 to 15 degrees above what the boiling point of the refrigerant is for the current pressure you are reading. If the temperature is more than 15 degrees, add R-22 in 4oz increments allowing 5min in between each time you add until you are in the "zone". When you do this, your head pressure needs to be 225-250. if you need to cover the coil or block the outdoor fan to do this then do it. Hook up the vacuum pump and start over

SOURCE: Goodman Heat Pump GSH 130601 5 ton unit - Compressor seized

goodman makes the cheapest unit on the market bar none. they are the absolute lowest end of the scale when buying a system. they are for that reason the best selling unit in the industry. so you should expect loud and clunky performance. expect only that they will perform, but dont even begin to expect them to perform quietly or smoothly. your warranty is only a year on these cheap pieces of equipment compared to a 5 or 10 year parts and labor warranty on trane and am standard equipment,so the labor will eat you alive on the cheap stuff. and when the expensive parts fail they will be really expensive.all compressors are now manufactured by about three compressor manufacturers, copeland tecumseh and bristol. so what ever brand you buy will have possibly the same compressor in it. all ac s in recent years have expansion valves that require a hard start kit. many cheap sluggo installers will not add the required hs kit even though they know it is needed and required by the manufacturer. so if the txv ( thermostatic expansion valve ) is a non pressure equalizing valve it has trouble starting against unequal pressure and voila , the compressor wont start. i have seen many a dumb+++ add a start kit to boost starting torque when the oem run capacitor is in fact weak or bad . if run cap is weak (test it) the start cap will temp fix. but you have not really fixed the problem if the run cap is bad eventually it will fail then no start again etc. despite the fact its a year old heres what you need to do. check filter for cleanliness. vacuum out drain for clean and clear drainage, run unit 15 minutes on a warm day , check run caps on fan outside and on compressor outside . they should be within 10 percent of rated mf values printed on side.feel suction line, cold? ok. not cold? call a pro for under charged or inefficient compressor. if cold then look at contactor points. they should be clean and golden colored. no char ,no gray or dark areas. a pro can tell with gages if charge is low or compressor is weak. as high pressure falls off and gets low ,suction pressure gets weak and rises. this would be a weak or bad compressor. as head ( high) pressure falls and suction pressure also falls this would be a case of low ref charge. you as a home owner can stick a cheap thermometor in the incoming and outgoing duct and expect to see a difference of 20 degrees . less equals low charge, or weak compressor,

SOURCE: Goodman CK36-18: Outside fan kicks on, but

Sounds like a bad capacitor. They can be bad and the fan will still run. Turn off power and check for burnt wires on the top of the contactor going to the capacitor or on the top of the capacitor.. Check terminals on the compressor also. When capacitors go bad they are slightly swollen. They can also look good and be bad . Could be compressor but start with capacitir and wires. IWork on a lot goodman units. Most of the time it is the cap.

SOURCE: Blowing hot air, compressor not kicking on, just fan ? ?

are you speaking of the outside fan or inside? compressor should be a little warm but not boiling hot. the unit could be low on freon. if low it will run a while but the compressor will overheat and shut off leaving the fan running by itself ouside. if nothing outside is running check power. if you have power check the contacted outside to make sure it's pulled in. contacters are bad about going out on goodman untis. Also ants can get under contacts.

Condencer runs for 20 sec then off keeps repeting after 2 or 3 min goodman central system

Seems like it trying to start and then cuts out , possibly on overload. Try the machine on fan blow only , that will check the indoor unit to see if that is working. Then try cool or heat function while listening to the machine starting. If you hear a loud humming just as the fan starts, and then it cuts out, It could be a compressor issue. Possibly the start capacitor has failed.

Why is my goodman gsx16 making intermttent humming noise

need to get it checked , it could be the capacitor for the compressor or the fan but if left to long will cause compressor burn out .capacitor should only cost a few bucks 10-20 dollar part just a guess from here but much cheaper .

This AC makes a severe Churning noise when the compressor runs. It now makes a strange noise when your start the unit and then 'hums'. It seems to have problems with the compressor 'kicking...

lots of compressors make strange noises and run for years. I hate to suggest installing a hard start kit simply because I always wonder what we did before they came out with a hard start and machines lasted longer BUT, check amps on start up, amps while running, watch amps for a bit while it's running, install hard start kit. just like all mechanical equipment, it may last 5 weeks, it may last 5 years. Best Wishes!!

It is probably the start device(the coil looking things), as long as you don't hear the compressor humming. A loud hum is a lock compressor and the cost would be far greater than a new unit.

Humming sound coming from compressor on goodman heatpump but the unit works fine

A humming sound is not unusual for any a/c compressor. In some cases the humming is nothing more than a loose exterior housing. If it works fine don't worry about the noise.

I need help with a buzzing sound in my air conditioner.

It is probably the compressor humming. They can make some funny noises especially on start for a while. If the unit is not cooling it may be the start capacitor or the comressor may be locked up.

See if you can hear the compressor start, if that does not start and your fan hums, it is most likely your dual capacitor. If compressor starts and fan hums, it is most likely your fan.

3 year-old Goodman compressor/heat pump terribly loud @ start

I don't think this problem (btw I agree 'from a far distance' with the Hvac guy) is inherant to Goodman, after all the compressor (that is in the unit) is one that if found in other brands too.

Of course the compressor is under warranty so there's no charge for it - but - $800 to change out the compressor (and that's the proper fix) is a 'bit' high - you possibly could save a few bucks by getting some other estimates.

good luck!

Fan on the outside unit is not running

Fan motor is dry or going bad try to lubricate it and see if that frees it up. If not you will need to get a new fan motor.
