How to recover data from dead sata hard drive

Two things die on most hard drives, The really serious one is that the spindle motor coil opens up and you have a dead motor. But, most of the issues with hard drives ends up being the controller board dying. Look at the model number of your drive and see if you can find a good used one on Ebay that has the exact same model number. They have to match! After getting the same drive usually at a bargain price you then swap the controller boards and they try out your drive. Almost 100% success for me as I have done this many times for friends, family and others who had a drive that died for no reason. Now, if you have dropped your drive then kiss it good bye as the head structure will be totally destroyed! I have taken those apart and removed the platters and put them into a matching drive, this is not for the novice user to do. but its is worth the try if the data is very important. good luck

How can I recover my files after I drop my external hard drive?

First of all - STOP using your WD drive immediately! If you continue using the disk drive, you significantly increase the risk that the files you want to recover will be lost forever due to overwritten. Every new file or action will take up more "free space" and reduce your chances of retrieving your deleted files from WD. So really, you need to act quickly.

The next step - get a good HDD data recovery software to retrieve the data as most as possible.

The drive is dropped and can't initialize

Hard drives do not like being dropped. They are sensitive to shocks, most likely this hard drive is now dead.
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their servoces.

Do repair external hard drive

To repair or recover data from a dead hard drive is not possible by us mortals.
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives, but it will cost you and arm and a leg for their services.
If you wish to recover your data do a Google search for such companies on the Internet.

Hello fixya my lacie 1 terrabite fell but not that hard. its being seen by by my imac but i cannot access it. it is also making clicking sounds like when a drive is reading. but louder. ken

All i have to say, is the drive is dead! the drop has damadged the internals and it will cost thousands to recover the data off the drive. If you dont want to spend loads on recovering the data, you could put the drive in a zip-lok bag and put it in the freezer for about 2 hours, then remove the drive and see if the drive is detected, if it is quickly copy all your data onto another 1tb drive and hope for the best, if its still not detected you out of luck i guess.

I lost the information on my drive and I need it back, how do I do it back?

There is software that can recover deleted files from a drive if that part of the drive hasn't been overwritten since you deleted the files. If you lost them due to a bad hard drive then the solution is much more expensive. There are companies that can repair broken hard drives and retrieve your data but they range in cost from $300.00 to 1700.00 depending on the damage to the drive. You can go to places like www.westerndigital.com and in their support site there are a list of recommended companies that do data recovery.

I have a dead hard drive 2.5" SATA

If it is truly dead and you MUST have the information from it then the only real alternative is to send it to a data recovery expert. These services are NOT cheap
If it clicks or makes random noises clicks pings etc then it is most likely dead I am afraid.

Hi there.
I'm sorry to say that if the HDD does not spin up and is totally dead then you cannot retrieve any data from it yourself. You will have to send it in to specialist data recovery firm so they can take the platters out and recover the data that way, and it will cost a fortune!

Good luck and thanks for choosing FixYa!!
