Question about Harley Davidson Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Desktop Telephone

1 Answer

2008 Fat Boy with V and H big radius pipes, stage 1 air cleaner, and fuelpack unit. It idles rough sometimes when first starts but not always. Also once warmed up I stop at a light and it stalls but also not all the time. The stalling when warm up started before any change to exhaust or air cleaner. Any ideas?

Hello,

Given that the bike is fuel injected, and problem occurred before the mods were done, I would lean toward either the oxygen sensor or MAP (manifold absolute pressure) might be having a few issues. I would look at the O2 sensor first though.

Rough idle and popping on deacceleration 2000 HD Fat Boy

Sounds most likely an intake leak.

With engine at idle, spray a little carb cleaner around where that carb bolts to the manifold, and where the manifold attaches to the 2 cylinder heads.

If the idle speed picks up, there's your leak.

The intake rubber seals rot over time, start to crack, and allow air to enter, leaning out your carb mixture.

Rough idle and stalling

it will have codes but the scanner in use doesn't have the right protocol for reading them
Indicates a faulty ambient air temp or BARO sensor so there will be codes

Just started idling rough, sometimes stalling

Shot in the dark here without knowing the vehicle but it could be an Idle Air Control valve starting to fail. An IAC (idle air control) motor is designed to adjust the engine idle RPM speed by opening and closing an air bypass passage inside the throttle body. The cars computer or PCM (powertrain control module) receives information from various sensors and will output signals to adjust the idle air control motor in or out to adjust engine idle speed by controlling engine idle air. An idle air control motor can fail one of two ways, either the motor short circuits and stops working or the motor will develop high resistance and cause the idle air control motor to react slowly, either failure can cause the engine to stall at idle. When a trouble code scan is performed it sometimes won't always detect a failed or weak idle air control motor. To check the idle air control motor remove the unit, with the wires connected turn the key to the "on" position without starting the engine, the idle air control should move in or out. If the idle air control motor does nothing it has probably failed, replace it with a new unit and recheck system. Note: while the idle air control motor is removed clean (use aerosol carburetor cleaner) the passages the idle air control uses to control idle air speed, also inspect the idle air control for a build-up on the seating (pointed) end and clean as necessary.

Hello, My 2011 fatboy lo runs very hot. I have Vance and Hines big radius and screamin eagle stage one kit. It runs hot but it runs awsome. i wanted to put an oil cooler on the bike but was told to leave...

There's hot and there's too hot. Heat is one of the factors that shorten the life of an engine, especially an air cooled engine. You bike is equipped with the oil jets that help cool the pistons. If it were my bike, I'd take the bike to a known good high performance shop that had a dynometer, an exhaust gas analyzer, and a good mechanic that knew what he was doing with both the bike and the dyno. I'd have them run the bike up through the RPM range and check the fuel-air mixture ratio at various rpm levels. If the bike is running too lean, it'll run hot. Lean is mean but too lean is bad. The mechanic may can richen the mixture up just a bit, say from 14.2:1 to 13.7:1 and reduce the heat while maintaining the performance you want. It's worth a try.

Good luck
Steve

My 05 fatboy seems to run pretty good but it tops out at 90mph and the local dealer says he has done everything he can it has se pipes and breather, a stage one download a power commander and was tuned on...

yes, there is more you can do.Like a big bore kit, matched with some higher rpm cams, but remember this is a softail with the balancer motor so it will always steal some power away from the wheel.

Oil come out the air cleaner

Too much crankcase pressure or the breather pipe is split/dosconnected. The crankcase breather goes into the rear of the air filter and the crankcase gasses are drawn in to the cylinder with the gas/air mixture and burned
