The hard disk inside had died - and all it has needed for this to happen was just a shock.

capacitor in the power unit has blown up.
i hope you have a warranty, if not you can call around see if any one repairs these units, you could call the manufactures customer service line see if the have authorized dealers to service there units.
most of the time the cost of labor and parts it mite be cheaper to buy new one, this depend how old this unit is.
check with the credit card you used, did you buy the extended warranty, where you purchase it will have service provider for that unit.

It doen not turn on completly. The green light blinks about every 5 seconds but doesn't turn on.

it is not getting enough power. Use a two ended USB plug (both ends into computer) one into HD, or use external power adapter

External Harddrive does not work

Hi:
Hitachi hard drive are junk they are poorly made, but here is an option the could by a bigger hard drive and install it in the External case they are all the same, first take out the old HD from the case and take it with you to the store and purchse the same connection type wether its IDE or Sata and install it in the case, the cases are universal and all most all 5-1/4 inch HD will fit in the case is does not have to be A Hitachi Brand any brand will fit, I recommend a Seagate HD.

Setting HD as secondary

Hi there,

ok easiest option to do this is to buy a USB Hard Drive Caddy.
Click Here

Then you just insert the HDD into the caddy and plug it in via usb and you will have access to all your files unless your hard drive is corrupt :)

Hope this helps

Problems with Hard Drive

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

T your concern:
  • initially, pls verify that it is indeed an external storage problem rather than a laptop USB issue by trying other USB devices and determine if they are recognized and working;
  • disassemble the enclosure of the Acomdata external hard drive and remove the actual hard drive;
  • you would need the use of a 2nd PC, a desktop that could accommodate the HD from the Acomdata (IDE or SATA);
  • install the HD from the Acomdata as a Secondary Master or Slave internally to the 2nd PC;
  • boot the 2nd PC and determine if the HD from the Acomdata will be recognized as a local drive;
  • chances are that the partition of the HD from the Acomdata was messed up. This would explain the blinking blue light;
  • download and install a file recovery program. An example is GetDataBack (unfortunately not a freeware but DEMO is available) and do a recovery. It would take some time based on the size of the HD from the Acomdata;
  • temporarily save the recovered data in the 2nd PC. You can burn this likewise into a DVD backup should the 2nd PC be capable of that;
  • after recovery, re-partition and format the HD from the Acomdata while still attached to the 2nd PC;
  • should the re-partition and format be successful, you can transfer back the temporarily saved recovered files;
  • a nice, simple, fast and safe partitioning/formatting software is Partition Magic (unfortunately not a freeware but FREE TRIAL is available).
  • should the re-partition and format be not successful, you can replace only the HD and/or claim warranty.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

And for some reason most of the time when i open 'my computer' and the hard disk usb cable is plugged in 'my computer' stops responding !! However the 'safely remove disk' icon comes on the task bar and i can remove it from there. But i cant read it from explorer. The light on the HD keeps blinking. It reads my friends HD and flash drive. Please help me.

Check for unit posting any blink codes on the timer LED. Google "sony blinking codes" for the explanation. Try turning unit off for 4 hours to force a hard reset of your set, you need to unplug it. Sounds like a low voltage problem in the HV circuit.
