Question about Maytag Washing Machines

Open Question

Our Maytag Ensignia MAV6458 will not agitate. We looked at the belt and it doesn't appear to be damaged. You can spin the pulley clockwise with ease but there is friction spinning it counter-clockwise. It does move with some force. Thanks.

SOURCE: Maytag won't spin or agitate

I have had the same problem and found that the teeth on the under side of the agitator had been worn down to nothing... I assume this is from years of over loading (not from me) and so the agitator could not spin any more... i would tighten the bolt that holds th agitator on and it would come loose after a few loads. So my solution was to get a little bit longer bolt and newer plastic washer and tighten it as tight as i could and it seemed to work. Versus buying a new agitator base that would cost about $20-$30 and would have to wait for the part to be ordered. hope this helps

SOURCE: Everything is working except the spin cycle

Sounds like the spin coil/brake solenoid is burnt out or broken. This is a coil situated on the motor plate under the machine with a lever attatched to it. When the machine goes into spin cycle, this solenoid pulls the brake away from the outer drum to allow the drum and agitator to spin together. The shaft that goes into this coil should move in and out freely. If tight, replace spin coil/brake solenoid.

SOURCE: removing bolt in agitator arm

The bolt unscrews counterclockwise. Hold the agitator by the bottom vanes. If it won',t budge try tightening it first, just a little to break it free.

SOURCE: Maytag LAT9757AAE,top load washer won't spin.

Sounds like a sticky brake assy. This type of brake is very tricky and should be checked be a service technician

It's possible to do it yourself but not recommended because of the 200 lb. pressure spring. Hope the diagram will help.

HELLO THERE:

SYMPTOM: WASHER FILLS, BUT DOESN'T AGITATE AND/OR SPIN
1) Check the imbalance/lid switch FOR continuity. Check also the speed selector switch (if any), the water level and water temperature switches for proper operation .
NOTE: If any of the selector switches on the console are only partially pushed in, it may cause improper function.
2) Check for a broken or badly worn belt.
3) Check the motor rollers and tension springs for damage and the motor roller tracks for jamming. Any of these might cause the belt to be loose.
4) Check the appropriate timer circuits for continuity.
5) Remove the belts and see if the motor will start. If you hear the motor buzzing, but it doesn't start in either or both directions, test the capacitor (if any) and starting switch
If it does start with the load removed, turn the pump and transmission pulleys by hand, in both directions, to see which is locked up. If the pump is locked, If the transmission pulley is locked,. Note that the transmission pulley will normally be very stiff when turning it in the clockwise direction, as you look at the bottom of the washer.

If you turn the transmission pulley one way it will agitate the other it will get hard raise up to release the brake and then turn the transmission and the inner drum. If you cannot turn the drum then I would check to see if a nail has gone through one of the holes in the bottom of the drum or a piece of clothing has jammed between the top of the drum and the top cap of the outer tub.

I need to replace the drive pulley on a Maytag top load A104 and don't have information on adjusting the pulley for proper clutch action. How is it set?

The drive pulley has nothing to do with the proper clutch action. It doesn't have any mechanism whatsoever that is associated with the clutch It's sole function is to transfer the mechanical energy of the drive motor to the drive shaft. You just have to align the drive pulley and the motor pulley for proper belt tension and efficient transfer of the motor's mechanical energy. As long as it is aligned properly then you don't have to worry about the drive pulley. You must turn your attention to the clutch assembly and the gear case if you have an issue with the agitate or spin cycles.

It will help if you can clearly state the issue with your machine. I can deduce that you have an issue with the agitate or spin cycles. You don't have to accept or reject and rate this post to add information or post comments and follow-up questions. Accepting a solution does not stop you from communicating with an expert. You can continue communicating with the expert as long as you need assistance regarding the issue stated herein.

might b motor fault or jammed gearbox.when motor turns one way it drains and spins, when it turns other way it agitates, might b jamming when it turns for agitate.try looking under unit and remove belt, then turn main drive pulley by hand clockwise then anticlock to see if it is jamming. turn power off first dont want any accidents.please reply to see how u go.good luck

The drum does not spin. the agitator works normally, then when time to empty the pump works, but an odor of the belt slipping is noticed and the drum will not spin. When lifted up to inspect the belts,...

seems to be a transmisson problem, the pump is driven by the motor also. so the motor should be ok. and the agitator works ok. believe it would be a transmission gear failure.

New belt

First put the belt around the small pulley, shd be the motor pulley i think. Then ease the belt around the big pulley & gently move clockwise if the pulley is on the left side; anti clockwise if you are inserting on the right side. The belt will fall into place. Actually it is very simple.
