SOURCE: wiring for Briggs & stratton

Check out this Briggs and Stratton manual and see if it helps you sort things out:

Usually alternator wires are red and black. They also have an AC output that goes to a rectifier to make DC.

This is the standard B&S ignition:

White wires can be for headlights or ignition kill. WHITE / Light wires usually come from the battery positive post.

  • Locate your lawn mower's ignition coil by opening the lawn mower's hood or removing the engine cover and locating the spark plug. Pull the spark plug wire off of the spark plug and follow the wire to the component mounted just below the motor's flywheel. This is the ignition coil.

  • Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to gently pull off the small "kill" wire that is attached to the ignition coil. This wire stops the motor by grounding out the ignition coil. Unbolt the ignition coil from the motor using a screwdriver or socket wrench, and pull the coil away from the motor.

  • Install the new ignition coil by loosely bolting it into place. Attach the "kill" wire to the coil and plug the spark plug wire onto the spark plug.

  • Insert a business card into the gap between the ignition coil and spark plug. Tighten the ignition coil's mounting bolts and spin the flywheel by hand. The business card should move along with the flywheel as it turns. If the card binds or prevents the flywheel from spinning freely, loosen the ignition coil bolts and reposition the coil slightly before testing again.

  • Lower the mower's hood or replace the motor cover.

Check the valve clearances and especially the inlet valve to make sure that it is not riding (staying slightly open) B&S are notorious for valve problems as most of their motors do not have a valve adjustment on them, the valves stems have to be filed/ground down to get a clearance. Somewhere between 0.010 to 0.015" is near enough for the inlets and about 0.005" more for the exhaust. It is not critical.

    Lawn mower won't start

to check for firing remove the spark plug insert it in the plug boot and pull the rope while watching to see if the plug sparks be carefull not to touch the plug electrode while pulling the rope or it will shock you. If you don't have a spark, try a different plug. If still no spark the coil could be bad.

Oil appearing at exhaust, smokey, briggs and stratton lawm mower.

You will need to replace or clean the air filter, and probably the spark plug. Do not operate the mower for some hours to allow the oil drain (inside the engine). Check oil level and fill it if necessary. Some oil remaining in the exhaust should be burnt next time the lawnmower operates. You will see smoke at the beginning, that will be normal (burnt oil). Hope this helps!

Replacement part for Craftsman 650 Briggs & Stratton 22" multi cut mower Model #917.376741

You first need to locate the model number on the mower, not the Briggs engine. Then go to and enter your model number on the right side of the web page. This will take you to a list of parts for your mower. Your model number should be located on the deck of the mower (you didn't say if it was a rider or a push). Rider model numbers are located on the rear of the body behind, on or under the seat. Push model numbers are found on the back of the deck between where the handles attach to the frame.

If your mower does not have "OHV", overhead valves. You can use a Champion j19lm spark plug.
If you discover you do have overhead valves; A Champion RC12YC, will work.
