This is an electro lux slide in range. There are two ovens. There are air vents at the top of the over door. These fans may be the problem.

This is not a microwave oven. We are dealing with an Electro Lux slide in range.

Remove the top grill and open the control panel. Check the hood thermal cut-out (#5 on the diagram) for continuity. It has to be replaced if it's closed.

If there is nothing wrong wrong then the control board most likely has gone bad.

If the fan continues to run when oven thermostat is off, means the thermostat needs to be replaced. Quote the model no. and possibly seriel no. when ordering the new one. Please switch off at the plug and isolator if wiring is fixed to the wall.

When cooking the fan doesn't run anymore. When I start cooking food the fan used to start right away, now it runs for a few seconds then stops but the food is still being heated.

The fan, a door switch, or control board relay may be causing the fan issue. Running the MW without a fan will not only cause steam buildup inside the cavity, it will cause the magnetron to overheat. If the MW has a thermal protector on the mangetron, it should shut the oven off when the temperature gets too high.

Fan runs when door is closed and no time set.

Some GE units were starting on their own. I would definitely unplug this oven and call GE to make sure yours wasn't one of the ones being re-called.

The fan starts up and runs on its own and we are cooking

That is a normal safety feature.

That's only covered in a very subtle note in the hood fan section of your owner's manual:

NOTE:If the temperature gets too hot around the
microwave oven, the fan in the vent hood will
automatically turn on at the HIGH setting to cool the
oven. It may stay on up to an hour. When this
occurs, the fan can not be turned off.

If for some reason you don't have your owner's manual, you can download it here.

Enter your model number as MV1610ST with no spaces.

You will need the free DJVU viewer to view or print your manual.

If it's new, it should still be under warranty, so I would contact Whirlpool at http://whirlpool.com/custserv/index.jsp

Fan and light constantly on

which fan? the exhaust fan or the control board cooling fan? the cooling fan is controlled by a thermostat just behind the control panel. it turns the fan to protect the board from overheating.
