Sounds like the needle is not inserted the right way or the thread is unwinding in the wrong direction. Go to Singer.com and download a free manual,

Wont pickup bobbin thread when sewing.

Make sure you are using a brand new needle. Bent/damaged/dull needles frequently will fail to pick up the thread.

If it continues to skip stitches, it most likely has a needle/hook timing issue--the needle arrives at the bobbin at the wrong time to intercept the bobbin thread.

There are web sites and videos available that discuss sewing machine timing, or you can take it for service.

The needle will not pickup the bobbin thread?

First, make sure to install a brand new needle. Damaged needles frequently will not pick up bobbin thread.

If a new needle doesn't work, then most likely the machine has a needle/hook timing issue (the needle is arriving at the bobbin at the wrong time to connect with the bobbin thread).

Has this just started after a jam up? As it's usually a symptom of timing being out.
However first check needle is in right way, flat shank to the back and threading is correct including the take up lever.

Bobbin thread not coming up

You need to do the first pickup by hand. Lower the threaded needle by using the hand wheel not the foot pedal, when it comes up, catch the needle thread carefully and pull up. It should bring the bobbin thread with it. Now you can start sewing. I hope.
