Over the last 2 days, I have had had 75 (seventy five!) attempts to install AVG Free 8.01 without success on 3 different computers. The computers run Windows 2000, all Windows Updates have been installed. Previously AVG 7.5 ran correctly. AVG Free 7.5 was uninstalled by Version 8.01 so the computers have no antivirus protection at all!

The message always reads: “Local machine: Installation failed
action failed for file avgmfx86.sys starting service Error 0x80070002”

Over the last two nights, I have read everything on the web about this error and have tried all solutions recommended. None of them work.

I don't think I will succeed in using AVG but I'd like to treat this as LEARNING experience and do a lot more READING

Can anyone out there recommend 10 books that can I buy and read to learn how to programme my computer to install software correctly?

The error message says contact AVG technical support if a problem persists but they don't reply.

I have the same problem withavgmfx86.sys:starting service..........
    Error: 0x80070002

I will try to clean my registry and start again. Unfortunately I have uninstalled AVG 7.5 and I see people are not at all happy with AVG 8.0 anyway.

Same as others trying to install AVG 8.0

Tried the suggested fixes as listed by Jerry, but still to no avail!

I continue to get the following message:
    Local machine: installation failed
    Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgmfx86.sys: starting service....
    Error 0x80070002

    Any other suggestions??

I have had a problem with AVG 8.0 for over a week. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, I can get the free version to load but always get the same problem as listed above. I have been working with AVG for a week and so far they haven't solved the problem. I ran CCleaner (registry cleaner) as suggested but that didnt' fix the problem. AVG tech support isn't as good as it once was. Has anyone else noticed this?

hi again efter many searching ifind this error can occur when an avg product is not completely uninstalled.
So I cleaned the registry with RegSeeker using the keywords "AVG" and "Grisoft", and it found many references. (I think that someone installed and subsequently uninstalled some avg products before I used this computer).
So, after the cleaning I restarted the computer and I was able to install AVG without problems.
I hope this can be useful to other users.

Use ?Reset_Access? utility and check all other anti-spyware solution as most probably other application (SpyBot, Spyware Terminator, ?) has blocked the access during installation copy paste the following url in the address bar of your browser and run the file. If this doesnt fix the problem try uninstalling and reinstalling avg. http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/support/reset_access_avg8_en.exe

Could be bad media.

Try another install cd. If the same problem occurs, then the hard drive probably has bad sectors.

This is simply a bad download. You will need to start by completely removing the failed install, otherwise you're going to run into it all over again. Now, did you save the down load or just run it straight from the net? If it was a straight run, you may have encountered a slight internet glitch during the run. What you want to do is save the download to the desktop, then right click on it and run as administrator. It should install properly this way. Another thing is make sure that you don't have any other Antivirus, spyware, or adware programs on the machine. If you do, you will need to remove them, AVG covers them all. The reason you want to remove them is because they perceives the AVG as a threat, especially other Antivirus programs, not a harmful threat, but a competitor threat, and will stop the download or install. Antivirus companies, especially Norton, doesn't like to lose their customers, so they throw in these little blocking programs, in hopes that it will detour you from going to another.
