Winder only winds bobbin loosely

What I do is hold the thread coming from the cotton reel between thumb and index finger to add a little tension, that makes all the difference. Only takes a moment, unless you have a screw tension disc between the cotton reel and the bobbin winder which you could tighten a little.

Thread is bunching up in bottom.

It sounds like you have no tension on the bottom bobbin reel. Did you check your tension on the bobbin reel. The tension must be right on both sides. When pulling on the cotton when the reel is in its bobbin case you need to feel a little resistance. Adjust the tiny srew on the bobbin case to tighten the reel to avoid it to turn in the casing.

Where can I buy a spindle for large cotton reels?

Try an industrial sewing place. Google "leather sewing machine company. Cobra" The resulting page will have leather sewing machines but they also have the spool holders you are looking for. They just screw right on to your table, mine holds up to 2lb spools of thread.

I am sewing a cotton piece of fabric for a dress and i do not know how to set the tension for cotton

The tension for cotton is set the same way tension is set for any fabric:

1. The thread should pull freely with a small resistance before/after it goes through the needle, on many machines that's half way on the tension adjustment.

2. The bobbin thread when dangled by the thread with the bobbin inside the case should drop down a bit when slightly flicking your wrist like you do with a yo-yo. If it reels out to the floor the tension is too loose. If it doesn't drop at all it is too tight.

3. Now make sure you use the right type of needle. For cotton you want a "sharp" and for reg. weight cotton about a size 10 maybe 12.

Now take a piece of strap cotton material like you're going to sew a seem and sew with a wide zig zag. Example the top side and then the bottom. They should appear identical, flat with needle holes at each side where the thread disappears to the other side. You should see no loop where the threads over lap each other and the material should not be puckering in the middle.

If that is not what you see then think this way:

The TOP side of the stitch is effected by the BOTTOM thread. the bobbin tension.
The BOTTOM side of the stitch is effected by the TOP /needle tension.

Adjust the responding tensions until the stitch looks the same on both sides. Now you are ready to sew your cotton! :)

I have an old Singer, Model #6146 from the late 70's or early 80's, can't remember when my mom bought it, but I can't remember how to thread it and I don't know how to put the thread on the bobbin. Any...

Cotton reel on top, take the thread from the reel to the left and over the top guide, straight down throught the tension discs, back up to the take up lever making sure the lever is at the top, through the lever right to left, straight down through any guides and thread needle front to back.
To wind the bobbin, reel of cotton on top, bobbin on bobbin winder making sure it is pushed to the left, take the thread to the left and round the small wheel and back to the winder, wind the thread round a few times on the bobbin, push the windewr to the right, and loosen the stop motion in the balance wheel.

Top sewing thread keeps breaking

generally, this is a threading problem, but don't rule out that you may have a weak thread.
try cleaning all the guides by cutting a thread at the cotton reel and pulling it towrds the needle, and double check the tension. i hope this helps

Riccar 9600, no manual, how do we thread it?

If I remember it is reel of thread on the reel pin, make sure the presser foot is up and takeup lever at the top, take the thread to the left and over the top cotton guide, straight down through the tension disc and down to the larger guide, round the right and take the thread back up the left hand side, through the takeup lever right to left and follow the guides all the way down to the needle, thread needle front to back.

I don't find the bobbin pin .how to wind the bobbin?

It's usually on the top of the machine near your cotton reel pins. Sometimes though they need pulling out of the top of the machine so you may need to pull them up in order to use them.

My Brother machine also has holes to put the bobbin pins into, could it be that the bobbin pin is missing and you need to put new ones in?
