1 Answer

Trying to install a new xp install on an HP Pavilion a1320n with a new 1.5 TB drive. XP only seems to recognize it as a 131062 MB drive. Is this an XP problem or a problem with the BIOS or Processor?................Thanks

Theoreticaly win xp will support 4Tb hard driver (hdd), but, your motherboard need to support this size as well, in your case, in both accoutns you are within limits.

This was theory, now practicality, LBA (Logical Block Address) was originally created as 24bit for ATA/PATA?ATAPI devices, calculated size supported therefore is 137.4GB.

In case of your computer, this motherboard should support 48bit formating and therefore size of 144.000.000GB (144.000TB).

I would suggest following actions, go to this site:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=1818050#N1388

Download newwest BIOS, unfold it to the disk and update BIOS, then use in installation windows xp sp2 or above, windows xp alone do not format properly harddrivers that size.

Another causative agent is how windows create partition and format under NTFS/NTFS5 system. It creats enormous size MBR and reserved "patch" for system files, in your case this is main "loss" of the space.

You can actually "reclaim" heaps of this spce by partitioning, but this crates another problems and you need to investiate which method will be best in your particular case.

Yes you can, for hard drives larger than 2TB you will need a 64 bit operational system like Windows 7, XP recognizes hard drives up to 2TB.

Hi :) Did you remove the drivers for the old video card before you installed the new card? and if not you need to make sure if you have onboard video that it is shut off in the Bios and plus the F3 button just after post and pick VGA MODE before going in to windows.

1 TB Rock Mobile External Harddrive capacity

No. It is not that way. how it is read is as under: 1 K is 1024 bytes 1 MB is 1024 K bytes 1 GB is 1024 MB 1 TB is 1024 GB. As per books. BUT, when it comes to selling HDDs 1 TB is 1000,000,000,000 bytes. the extra 24 bytes at each lelvel have been overlooked. Thats where you loose so much of disk space.

Im using hp dv6700t laptop,i want to install xp on my laptop

Your laptop has a SATA hard drive and windows XP doesn't recognize those drives cause the operating system came out before those drive were made.

Follow these steps I found thru google to get windows xp sp3 to recognize your drive:

http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-39282-xp-can-t-recognize-hard-drive-for-os-install

You'll have to use a program to do this but people explain how to do it on that page plus the program is free.

During installation, windows XP only recognizes 131062 mb of my 320 gb hard drive

This is because "the original ATA specification used a 28-bit addressing mode, allowing for the addressing of 228 (268,435,456) sectors (blocks) of 512 bytes each, resulting in a maximum capacity of about 137 gigabytes" (wikipedia). To fix this try upgrading your computer's bios and enabling any bios entries for larger disks. Also make sure that you are running your operating system with all of the current updates.
