Question about Lionel Cw 80 Transformer

1 Answer

I want to get a replacement for the control 20 pin IC (chip) for a Lionel CW80. I think it is a custom part. I had nearly finished repairing one of these units for a friend, when a short occurred at one of the power transistors. Now the green led does come on and the clock crystal isn't oscillating. There is still 5v supply. I would be very grateful if someone could tell me where to get one.

The 3rd passenger car has short in it and causes green light on cw80 to blink. Checked wires and contacts on trucks can't find problem.

Lionel uses insulated wheels on there power pickup trucks , one side will have insulation bands and one will not , insulated bands need to be all same side on same truck , lead end is different than tail end this is how it picks up power from tracks , sometimes trucks axles get popped out in playing and maybe don't get popped back in the same way , also its possible for insulating bands to get holes in them from use , a dot or two of black latex paint fixes these up (don't paint entire wheel)

Led blinks when train put on track

I am assuming you are using the Lionel CW80 power source. If so, the blinking light might indicate a partial short or a problem with the motor. The reason I believe that is that the CW80 has an internal fuse, which will blow for near shorts/shorts. A stalled motor i.e stuck drive gear, can cause excessive power drain although not enough to blow the internal fuse and also cause the engine not to move. Also, If the engine has the neoprene belt on one of the drive wheels it might have come off and is jamming the running gear or wheel. I believe the Polar Express only has one neoprene belt.

Bought a Lionel blue comet, Have legacy, put engine in program mode but engine will not accept engine I'd, what is wrong

You may need to have a chip upgrade done to your Legacy controler, especially if it is one of the earlier ones. Go to for instructions on how to determine if you need the upgrade. If this problem was identified for the Blue Comet then you should be able to find the solution listed on the Lionel site. If all else fails, e-mail them a description of the problem. Lionel provides great customer service.

Fix the IC's on 55 in Rear Projection TV

First verify you have a convergence problem by using the customer menu to see if adjustment helps or even works.

I will be kind here:idiots who go to all the trouble to get at the convergence chips and hope it will stick never fix a single set with this issue.

First these sets use a variety of chips---most two and a few just one larger one--real reason for failure is the chips have a metal back and white heat transfer grease is applied to each----guess what? after several years of the heat the grease dries out and bang a chip fails.

Lets see, 2 chips and the effort to get at them(a pair can be purchased for well under 20 dollars) I am not going to all that work to just solder--and clean old heat grease out and apply fresh.

Can the average person do this repair? Yes and I know as have done nearly 1,000 of them---for most of the Mitsubishi (not all) I have start to finish and step by step instructions for free (only via email and not here).

Set once repaired (both chips etc) will be good to go for this problem for another 5-8 years.

How to repair and locate vertical ic on apex tv

See attached photo of a typical chip--usually one row of pins (single in line package) and has the Generic part number right on the front--with the number on yours you can Google a pin out which will show what pins are voltage in, output etc.

Some are ones with two rows of pins staggered and offset.

Locate it also by looking for it to be attached to a metal plate for cooling--also when replacing it the white heat transfer grease on the back of it must be replaced with fresh grease--the white heat sink kind used in computers and electronic equipment of all kinds.

Not a bad idea if you had foldover on top of picture to look at the filter caps right around the chip--one will be a feedback cap--usually a 220uf or higher (uf is microfarad and the cap will have two pins with one a plus and the other a negative marked on them--if that cap is open the set will have nearly a full picture but have folded over lines at top of screen---if that fails it shortly gets the chip.

This is a typical one and yours will likely differ in the number of pins--7-13 pins is normal.

Toshiba 42h83 picture all over the place for at least 15-20 minutes. FUZZY WITH VERTICAL AND HOROZONTAL LINES Then works ok

Looks like you might have loose pins on vertical out put I.C. chip. Take care of the issue sooner, the better! Otherwise, picture will shrink permanently and you end up with big repair job. Vertical output chip attached to silver aluminum heat sink, in the middle of the chassis. You must have some soldering skills and equipment, of course. There are 13 pins at the chip. Flip chassis over and locate the chip. Be careful with wiring. If you unfasten wire clips, you will be able to get to the area, at your bottom. Use sharp tip 30 watt soldering iron. Pins are very close to each other what creates possibility of bridging adjacent pins. Use magnifier or reading glasses to complete the job. another possibility might be in a power supply area, "cold" side. some regulators might have solder joints weakened. Make sure, inspect every part attached to heat sinks. DO NOT TOUCH "hot" side of the power supply. There are charged high capacity electrolytic capacitors. If you start messing around there, quite a chance you will kill main regulator and get zapped badly! Also: slight possibility, that you may find leaked out electrolytic capacitors, which would behave in a similar way. If you see a little "puddle" near the capacitor, means: it's near empty. Most likely around "cold" side of the power supply. Replace those with same value and voltage ratings.
Good luck,

The picture is distorted. Looks like it is in 3D. There is a red shadow around every image on the screen. I have checked all the cables and changed the channels.

If you go into the customer menu and select convergence and it is skewed you need to remove the light box and replace both of the STK-392-110 CONVERGENCE IC chips this set uses.

I HAVE START TO FINISH, STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS REPAIR IN THIS SET--I can post them here if you think you or someone you know can do the repair.

Most shops get 300 or more for this repair--if you buy the chips on Ebay (I can tell you the seller to look for there) they and any other parts should total under 30 dollars. The fact that the set is still coming on means most likely just the two chips need to be replaced and the set adjusted with the Panasonic remote for this set.

If you have questions or want the instructions rate this solution and let me know and I will post them here---I do this here for FREE.

The 51G500A uses two convergence chips(IC chips) for convergence output.

Most of these sets use a STK-392-110 AND a STK-392-150----not often you see a set with two different number chips used---the 150 is a higher current device than the 110 chip----You need to replace both(a good idea is to replace both with the 150 chip---they last longer)

You will find them (as you look from the back of the set) on the right side on either one large or two separate metal heat sinks---the chips each have 18 pins and are black in color with the STK number printed in white on the face of them(they are about 2 1/2 inches wide x 1 1/2 inches tall).

Usually just both chips need to be replaced and the set adjusted--sometimes there will be a resistor near them discolored or burnt--you need to look for this if you do this repair---You can buy both the chips on Ebay for less than 15 dollars plus shipping.

If you are not able to do this yourself shop around your area---most shops charge 300-400 for this type of repair----I have done hundreds of them here and charge 200-250 and do the repair in the customer's home----if a shop tells you it has to go to the shop keep looking---any good tech can do this repair in your home in about a hour.

I am here to help people---if you need help or advice or have ANY questions reply to this posting here and I will try to assist you.

Blue convergance wont allaign verticaly with remote. only horizontal. so yellow shows above blue on picture. how do I correct this without spending money on this?

This is a 2001 model and uses a single STK-393-110 convergence IC----Two possible reasons for problem--

1) There is a plug near the front of the board on the far left(as you look at the set from the back) If this is the set I think it is some develop bad connections on the printed circuit board under that plug--usually the blue may from time to time be good and then bad.

2.) If you see a very large metal heat sink with fins on the far left side of the set-----the convergence chip is there---if this is your set you would have to unsolder the chip and another small chip behind to the left of to get the heat sink out to replace.

3) If you can unbolt the chassis enough to tilt it up so the bottom of all the boards faces the back of the set---I did one of these recently with this exact problem.

4.) If you get the chassis up look for a plug near the front of the board with 10 or more pins---the one I fixed had 2 or 3 pins broken loose from heat from the board----resoldered all of them and problem fixed--This customer wanted me to replace the IC which I did---it was original and this is not the most easy set to replace that part in.

5.) The plug goes to the convergence yokes and usually one of first 3 or 4 pins are broken loose from the board, If the plug connections are not your problem you will have to consider replacing the chip to correct this problem---I have seen at least 4 of these sets where the connections on that plug caused the problem---good idea if it is -----resolder all the pins on the plug and look at a few other plugs to the right of it also.

6.) Let me know if you find the bad connections and remember I am here to help people---If you need any further help or have any questions let me know by replying here to this posting.
