No I have just bought it. There is a message saying it is connected then another asking to look for drivers, which is does not find. I have this problem with all of my external hard drives. They work on XP without any problem but not with my Vista Home Premium

  • celticways May 03, 2008

device manager says it is working normally

I would like to add that none of my external hard drives work with my Vista, Seagate and Iomega drives, yet they work fine with XP.

Also none of my flash drives work on Vista, except a 2 year old Integral, yet all work on XP. I just bought a new Integral flash drive, but that does not work either.

Recently bought a Maxtor portable 250 GB HDD, need to format it to FAT32 so that my Playstation 3 can recognise it, but Vista will not allow it, can only format it to NTFS and exFAT. How can i format the...

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps. Before you begin, note that the FAT32 file system has size limitations. In this version of Windows, you cannot create a FAT32 partition greater than 32 gigabytes (GB). In addition, you cannot store a file larger than 4 GB on a FAT32 partition. For more information, see Comparing NTFS and FAT file systems.
blank.gif Converting a hard disk partition or volume from NTFS to FAT32 requires that you reformat the partition, which will destroy any data on it. Be sure to back up any data you want to keep before you begin.

Can i use this maxtoe diamond max 21 500 gb drive for a c drive i am removing a 80 gig that is defective

If you mean remove your old 80 gb drive and replacing with the Maxtor 500 gb drive you should be able to. The Maxtor 21 series is equiped with SATA. Just make sure that your computer can run SATA. If not, I believe that there are adapters out there.

Maxtor basics external drive

Hi Nuisance101, I recall your running vista. Vista is a nightmare. If you cound only see the troubles we see on a daily basis here at FixYa you'ed understand. It's a common problem with Vista not seeing USB devices, externial devices. It does & then the next second it doesn't. Same for all external devices. I'm am 100% sure the trouble is not your system or your devices. It's Vista. I have gone over dozens of post from vista users. One would think MS has been on vacation since the release of vista. You can look at vista's web site for help for a possible fix, at this link. (I have no faith). MS blames driver software. Your Maxtor drive is external. Henve no driver software.
So it falls into that vista area of one time vista see's the drive & the next it does not.
Either way I though Maxtor addressed vista issues. I prefer Seagate drives myself. Personally know lots of people who's Maxtor's drives have just gone down for no reason. Seagate bought Maxtor.

Most of the post from vista users, claim users should check vista's updates often. Since Max Blaster did its job, I'm inclined to blame vista.

I wish I could give you a better fix or suggestion but I'm up against vista. That's why I run WinXP Pro. I do not have these problems.

Best wishes Nuisance101!
Mike

Maxtor basics 160gb drive will not work with Vista

Hi Nuisance101, try downloading & run Maxtor's MaxBlast 5 software before you drive yourself nuts.

Maxtor claims Vista support.
Have more questions, feel free to ask.
Good Luck!

My maxtor hard drive is only 465gb. on the box it said 500. have i been ripped?

Can you give me the model number so i can confirm it for you.
the basic is Hard drive manufactures calculate 1000MB=1GB
but windows calculate 1024=1GB in that case windows show you less amount, its the technical way to arranging the FAT table. most of the time you may not been ripped, if you can give me the model number i can confirm.
