My makita cordless drill barely turns and is smoking

If it's pulling hard then gets hot enough to smoke your problem could be in either the motor or transmission. If you can, seperate the motor from the trans and try running the motor by itself. If it spins free and strong, you have a jammed transmission causing the motor to over heat. If it still labors your problem could be with the armature bearing(s), brushes, or armature windings.

I scratched my Kindle's body... how can I fill in these scratches? What is the body made of?

Its plastic. For a purely cosmetic repair (screen is unharmed?), you can buy all necessary tools and materials in well-sorted plastic model kit shops. E.g. Revell offers everything needed.
  1. Try out on a spare piece of plastic FIRST, e.g. an old toy. Repairs like this require some experience and considerable manual skill, but with training it becomes easier. You also want to get the color mix for painting right to match the Kindle's original color. Exercise until you are sure you can do it properly.
  2. Remove fine debris and rough edges from the scratches using a scalpel used for model kits.
  3. Carefully fill in plastic model putty into the gaps, a toothpick may come in handy here. Let dry thoroughly.
  4. Use fine (P280), then extra fine (P600) sand paper to even the surface. Don't scratch the screen, the buttons or any case part that still has its original state. If you want to the extra mile, you can also try to model the original surface texture (very advanced!).
  5. Cover the screen, buttons and any case openings with frisket sheet or special cover gum, and use plastic paint (air brush if available) to fix the color. Apply thin layers one by one and try to achieve a soft transition from unharmed to scratched area.

How do I change the belt on a dirt devil ultra vision vacuum cleaner

I just changed mine and I will be blunt. First off, the design is **** on this vacume, secondly the belt was designed to break on the rusty carbon steel pully rod. Ok now that I've vented we will get down to business. On the bottom of the vacume you will find a plastic housing thats covering the brush. It will have 4 screws around the brush plus one above them. The housing itself is shaped like an L. Remove all the screws and expose the bare brush. This was not my case but there should be a belt holding the brush to a small steel pully rod in the top part of the L indention. If not then just locate an indention on the brush where the belt will be placed and look directly beneath that to find the pully rod (probably about 6 inches beneath the indention on the brush). wrap your new belt around the metal pully rod and then take out the brush. Wrap the other end of the belt around the indention on the brush and pull up hard and replace the brush in its vacume housing. This will take some effort as the belt has to be stretched. When finished replace the housing cover with the five screws and boom you're done.

NEED TO CHANGE A BELT

First you need to remove the metal cover to expose the brush roll assembly. Push up the plastic cover connected to the foot pedal to expose the motor shaft. Remove the brush roll assembly and simply hook the belt on the motor shaft first then pull back the brush roll and push the brush roll back to the slot. There's a small piece of plastic on the left hand side of the brush roll. This piece would go in after the brush is set in the slot. Finally, replace the metal cover.

My jigsaw stopped running. Judging from the sparks coming from around the armiture, my guess is the trouble has to do with brushes or worn armiture. The saw is not an expensive one so perhaps it's not...

Many times I clean the commutator with light sand paper and she come back to life. Take a brush out and sand the end off to clean it. Then fold a small piece of sand paper and push it down in the hole where the brush goes and rotate the motor by hand and clean the comm off. Good as new!

Washer fills and drains but does not agitate or spin.

all front loaders have two motor brushes, The motor brushes are carbon and generally have a life span of 4-5 years with daily use. When these carbons wear down they make less contact with the motor armiture and need to be changed. For a service engineer this takes approx 15-20 mins and the parts cost approx €30-€60 in europe depending on the model. Melee and Beko tend to be the most expensive (But Melee brushes are far superior quality)
