Question about Brother Disney PE-180D Computerized Sewing Machine

Brother PE180D - the bottom bobbin thread pulls through to the top. Have tried bobbin both ways round and changed tension wheel through all settings but doesn't make any difference. Can you please help

Specific detail on bobbin case adjustment (with picture) near halfway down reply, the remainder will help you achieve a balance of top and bottom tensions.

Ensure that all is clean and free of lint and jams, this is the most likely cause....now for tension troubleshooting .......

This solution is for tension problems...if you cannot form any sort of stitch, the issue is quite different, so please let me know if you need a different problem solved.....

It is quite long, but just work through each section in order.

The "knotting up" can reveal a lot. If you have loose threads on one side or the other, the tension on the opposite side will be the culprit.

QUICK SUMMARY FIRST:
Ensure sharp new needle, 
Thread guides and Bobbin are Clean & Clear of lint
Set Top Tesion to 4 ....then....
Balance Bobbin to suit.

TOP THREAD TENSION:
If the looping threads are on the underside as you sew, it is the top tension. Top tension ought to be between 4 & 6 (this variation to allow for the different weights of fabric in your projects). 

IS YOUR NEEDLE SHARP ?
If you are using a needle that has seen quite a deal of work, or you suspect it may be blunt, change it for a new one !

TOP TENSION & GUIDES:
Make sure that when you thread the machine the presser foot is up so the thread goes between the discs and not to one side, top tension between 4 and 6, and that you have threaded through all the guides, including the last one, usually on the needle arm, just above the needle clamp.

It may be there is lint trapped between the discs, this will keep them slightly apart and reduce the actual tension, sometimes dramatically.

If tensions appear correct, and the thread is definitely in the channel between the discs, but still too loose and looping, try raising presser foot and remove your thread.

Now, with a 2" (50mm) wide strip piece of fabric 8 - 10" (20 - 25cm) moistened with methylated or denatured spirit, gently insert the fabric strip and clean between the discs with a see saw / to and fro action.

In the worst cases, gentle use of a needle to pick & remove the jam may be necessary, but be very gentle and make sure the tension is set at Zero and the presser foot is raised, (to disengage tension plates).... do not gouge or score the plates, they need a polished surface to work correctly.

BOBBIN TENSION:
Far less common, but if the loose threads are on the top, it is bobbin tension that is loose, it too may have lint in the spring and be giving a "false" tension. 

I would not recommend fiddling with bobbin tension without good reason, it may end up with missing small screws and spring pieces, however, you can take the needle plate off to clean 
the hook race area (where bobbin case sits) 

...this is just good housekeeping, my wife does this every time she replaces the bobbin....

just take it out and clean the bobbin case and the fixed metal hook race with a small brush to remove lint. If there is a significant amount of lint, use a vacuum and small brush to get the worst.

Then wipe all this area with a cloth or cotton bud (Q tip) moistened (not soaked) with methylated spirit, especially if there appears to be fine dirty deposits....oil and lint combine to conspire against you.

If it seems likely that you ......really ....do .....actually .....need .....to adjust the bobbin case, first check there is no lint trapped in the metal spring where the thread is tensioned. 

TOP LOADER:
Drop-in Bobbin case will look similar to this image with the tension screw in the middle of the metalwork....

FRONT LOADER:
....this is a bobbin case from a front loading machine and works in a very similar fashion to the top loader with drop in bobbin, again, if you dismantle it, take care so you can put it all 
back properly.

GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT:
When you are certain there's no trapped lint in top tension or bobbin, set the top tension to 4 and the bobbin tension to a point where you just begin to feel resistance.

Try using good quality thread of contrasting colours so you can more easily spot the changes.

Set your zigzag to one width less than maximum (eg. 5 of 6 ...or... 4 of 5 etc) and sew a sample for a few inches and check the result.... adjust the bobbin tension screw very little at 
a time, perhaps 1/16 of a turn.

You may find you are playing with this balance for some little while and if you are putting the needleplate on and off each time begin to think it cannot be correct to do this.....BUT....it is, 
and eventually, you do get a "feel" for the correct tension and then it happens quite quickly.....as a user you won't be doing it very often unless there is lint built up (or are there small hands at work around the house !?!?!)

OTHER ISSUES:
If you live near the ocean as we do, salt air can play havoc with metalwork inside and out, so to help minimise this, keep a few small packets of dessicant (silica gel) in your machine 
case....no case ? then make some sort of cover ! 

Same applies in any damp or humid environment, keep your machine dry and dust free.

Budget for a proper full service every couple of years (more often if heavily used) and if you don't use your machine for a few years, be aware that old oil will dry out and combining with 
dust and form a "clag" like glue (another reason for some sort of cover, even a teatowel !)

FINALLY, A WORD ON THREAD:
If it is worth spending the time, energy and money on making something that you would like to give lasting enjoyment......use quality thread, .......it may seem to cost a little more at the 
time, but the results, ease of use and added longevity will be worth the extra, and as a bonus, your tension troubles may be fewer and further between, because there is a more consistent diameter with good thread, and less compensating to be done by your tension plates and less thread breaks !

IT PROBABLY IS THREADED INCORRECTLY. GO SLOWLY BY THE DIAPHRAGM AND MAKE SURE IT IS THREADED CORRECTLY. ALSO MAKE SURE SPOOL PIN HOLDERS ARE IN PLACE THAT HELPS TO GUIDE THE THREAD CORRECTLY.

I suspect you are correctly threading the machine but the timing of the needle and bobbin hook is off. When the threaded needle goes into the bobbin area, a pointed hook grabs the thread and loops it with the bobbin thread. Something is catching when the needle starts to come up that is not allowing the bobbin thread to be pulled back through the needle plate opening by the upper thread. With machine threaded and bobbin in place, have the bobbin area open if possible and watch the thread interaction when the needle goes down. To set the hook/needle timing, normally covers have to be removed. Suggest taking it to an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer for service. Brother cs-6000 will not sew, the top thread go through and tangles on back, and the bobbin thread is a straight line and can be easily pulled out, please help, trying to make kids school clothes


Hi:

Ok... so try to remember that loopy stuff on top means the bobbin tension is too loose (or the top tension is too tight...)

Loopy stuff on bottom, means the top tension is too loose. (or it's not threaded right)

Now. Get some scrap of the same material. Loosen that bobbin back to where it was. RETHREAD the top, with the foot in the UP position.

Place your scrap under the foot, and sew. still have problem? clip your threads and try again only this time hold the top and bottom threads off to the side as you begin to sew. How did that do?

Adjust the top tension to the point where you start seeing the bobbin thread come up in loops to the top... then back off until the disappear.

Now... be sure you have the correct thread and needle for your fabric. A lot of problem are caused by not having the proper needle and thread.

I have a VX1250. I don't know how to regulate the tension.


There is two places to adjust thread tension: the top tension device controls the top thread tension and is usually a dial or knob with numbers on the front of the machine.

Then there is some form of tension device on the bobbin; in your case I believe the Brother has a removable bobbin case with a tension spring which holds the bobbin thread firmly: the tension spring can be adjusted with a screwdriver but once set, you shouldn't need to adjust this much, just alter the top tension slightly for different weights of fabric. So start by setting top tension dial to 4-5 and test stitch a seam. Use different coloured but the same type of thread top and bottom and take a look at the seam. You want to see a balanced even seam.

If the bobbin thread is too loose, then you probably will need to finess the tension spring on the bobbin case and adjust this slightly. The best way to set the tension on the bobbin case is as follows. Load the bobbin into the bobbin case and pull the thread tail into the tension spring, then suspend the bobbin by holding the thread tail up in the air (the dangle test). You want it to be just tight enough to hold its own weight, but still able to release thread when you pull gently downwards on the bobbin case. If it isn't doing this then take your little screw driver and adjust the screw on the leaf tension spring by ONE QUARTER TURN ONLY. Lefty looser, Righter Tighter. Then test again, and adjust again until its right.

Now test stitch again and finess your top tension to get the seam even. Remember to change the needle for each new sewing project too; this will impact tension also.

I am experiencing tension issues. Same fabric and thread, worked with the first spooling of the bobbin. Re-spooled the bobbin and now the tension is all messed up. Cannot tighten, and it's gathering...

How do i set the tension on my brother xl-3010 sewing machine . the bottom thread is always in knots but the top stitch is perfect. i do not know which wheel to turn for the bottom tension.


I don't have this machine, but the tension on the bobbin is usually set by the tiny screw on the bobbin case. insert the bobbin into the case so that the thread unrolls counter clockwise. Make sure that there is no lint in the bobbin area.

I have a 7570 and cannot get the tension the bottom thread is loose and can be pulled right thru I checked the top and adjusted the bottom and nothing seems to change.


When you thread your bobbin in the bobbin case, hold it only by the thread. If the bobbin and bobbin case fall, the tension is too loose. If this is the case, turn the bobbin tension screw 1/4 turn until the bobbin and bobbin case do not fall when only holding by the thread. The top tension should be set between 4 and 5. The best way to see which one needs to be adjusted is to do a zigzag. If the thread is pulling more on top and your top tension is set between 4 and 5, the bobbin tension is too loose. If your top tension is set between 4 and 5 and it's pulling on the bottom, the bottom is too tight.

My four-year-old XL3500 seems to have a tension problem. It was sewing fine until after I refilled the bobbin, changed thread twice, and did some zigzag stitching. Now the top stitch is not correct; it...


according to the diagram in the manual, the upper thread tension is set by the wheel/knob on top and just to the right of the thread take up lever and thread guide. If you don't have a manual, go to www.brother-usa.com they have a downloadable manual for your machine.

Hi, general rule of thumb:: loops on the top, problem on the bottom.. Loops on the bottom, problem is on the top.. When threading your machine, stop just before you thread your needle, put the presser foot down. Try pulling the thread. If it pulls easily, the thread is not thru the tension wheel right. If it pulls hard, you got it right.

Make sure your needle is fully inserted and turned the correct way.( If you load your bobbin case from the left side,the needle rule is normally FLAT to the RIGHT is RIGHT. There are some exceptions. If you have a newer style drop in bobbin or your bobbin case loads in the front then the rule is FLAT to the BACK.

My bobbin thread keeps looping up on the bottom, and after adjusting the tensions both ways I can't get it to stop making a mess.


try this:
Tension:
If the thread is loose on the bottom of the fabric, it's actually the top thread is too loose. Think of 2 little elves playing tug of war in your machine, one on top and one underneath. If you have loops on bottom, the top needs to pull harder (tighten top tension)
Thread test
Test your thread quality to start, thread your machine and LIFT the presser foot (this opens the tension disks). Pull your top thread straight back. If you feel no tension no matter how much thread you pull, your thread is good. If that your machine passes that test, we can go to step 2. If not, try different spool of thread, do the same test until you get a smooth pull (tip: always check your thread this way when you thread your machine)
Step 2:
Pull on your threaded bobbin thread while it’s in the machine. Does it pull smooth and even? If so, go to step 3. If not, try a new bobbin (bobbins get bent or distorted if wound too tight).
Clean thoroughly in the hook and bobbin case area and oil 1-2 drop is all.
Jamming bobbin case:
If it is damaged from turning out of place once, it could have rough spots on it that makes the thread hang on it, and keeps making it turn over and over. Use a finger nail board (fine sanding) and smoothall rough spots. Then reset the bobbin case taking care to put the notch in the bobbin case in alignment with the proper spot in the machine (basically 5 o’clock) when looking at the round area where the bobbin case goes

Threading lower bobbin


There are some different bobbin cases for different machines but the one you have is a pretty common one with a finger sticking out on top. If you examine the bobbin case you will see a slot on the side of it and there is another piece of metal screwed onto it. This is the tension they are describing.
To thread it properly, turn the bobbincase upside down and insert the bobbin in the case so you can see it. Place your thumb on top of the bobbin and pull the thread through the slot on the side of the case and under the piece of metal(the lower tension) which I described to you earlier.. When you have done that, remove your thumb from the bobbin and pull on the thread. It should have some tension on it.
Next,placing a thumb or finger on the bobbin to keep it from falling out, turn the bobbin case over.
Keeping the finger sticking up lift the lever on the
front of the case and insert the bobbin and bobbin case onto the spindle inside the hook assembly(The part that is in the bottom of the machine that turns when the hand wheel is turned.) Don't worry about the thread that is sticking out.
Holding the upper thread under the presser foot ,turn the handwheel towards you until the top thread pulls the lower thread to the top. Pull the thread to the left of the machine, insert your fabric, lower the presser foot and begin sewing
One more thing , The finger sticking up on the bobbin case will go into a slot on the ring holding the hook inside the machine.

Be sure you thread the upper part properly. It should go through the tension, then the take up lever and then the needle. Tension should be set at around 5
