Question about Microwave Ovens

Open Question

Westinghouse oven model EW050SB#01 electric oven. The oven door does not close properly allowing hot air to escape. The door usually only opens about half way making it difficult to get anything out of the bottom tray. I assume that the door has not been installed correctly? Your help and assistance is appreciated Thank you Bruce New Zealand

I would suspect a couple of wires are crossed.

GE puts mini-manuals in their units, which have wiring diagrams, schematics, etc. Very handy.

It will be folded up in a small envelope, usually behind the control panel or hidden elsewhere. That should help you.

Is it possible that some spray cleaner accidentally got into the controls?

I always recommend that users spray the cleaner on a soft cloth (not on the keypad itself) then wipe the control panel off.

Also, I always recommend non-ammonia cleaners since ammonia can crack and damage plastic.

Otherwise, the spray can get into the controls and lock it up or make it act odd.

Another thing that can cause this is steam or grease / smoke getting in the controls. The best way to prevent this is to be sure your hood exhaust fan is on whenever you cook on the stove top.

If it does not dry out over time, it may need to be manually dried or blown out.

I've followed up to your by e-mail address to be sure I help you fully.

SOURCE: Microwave oven runs with door open

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

Microwave still buzzing and not getting hot.I changed out the diode, HV transformer, and the magnotron. can some one help me. I already paid the ask-a-tech $30 to get this far.

The one thing you have not mentioned is the high voltage capacitor that is part of the high voltage section, this part does fail and in some cases causes a load on the supply line making the microwave buzz or blow the line fuse killing the power to the oven.

Before you do all of that, please check the door safety interlock switches for proper operation. These switches report to the oven if the door is open or closed. Forget what you know about the door, the oven needs to be told and in the simplest of terms. If you regularly open the door with the oven operating, you have probably damaged the contacts of the tiny switches. If the contacts do not close (open) properly, they don't report the door as being closed and as such, the oven will not turn on the heat (magnetron).

If you find these switches are operating properly, I suggest you check with www.repairclinic.com for your parts or with a FixYa.com advertiser whose message you will find around this page.

Will not operate. Does have power as the clock works.

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door switch mount, which are pretty simple problems to fix.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

2bc79ba.jpg

If the switch mount is broken, it's usually more economical and safer to add a dab or two of hot glue to the mount to secure the switch. Let it cool for about 30 minutes before using.

One test that sometimes helps is to gently lift up (and/or push down) on the door or handle as you try to start it. If it works or tries to work, then it's a door switch mount or door alignment issue.

Since this is posted under R-530BS, I'll assume that's your model number.

If that's not your model, feel free to contact me directly with your model number.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

You probably just have a bad primary interlock (upper door switch) or its mount is loose or broken.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

WON'T HEAT OR CLOSE DOOR PROPERLY. ALL ELSE SEEMS OK

Well firstly if the door wont close properly you shouldnt use this device as if you are in the kitchen whilst it is in use your slowly cooking yourself . If the door is open microwaves can escape and that is Radiation Lethal if you get too much or too close ?.
The reason it is not heating is probably because most of the microwaves are escaping and not bouncing around your oven cooking your food .. but actually bouncing around your home cooking you . My advise to you is get it repaired by a qualified Domestic appliance engineer or bin it and get a new one ..

Door-activated power switch is loose and/or has a short

Fixed this problem! The door latches were greasy and sticking in the closed position (i.e., pushed down so not latching and engaging fully when the door was closed) and this created the problems described above. Solution was to squirt some Windex into the latch holes to dissolve the grease. The switches popped back into position (must be spring-loaded) and the door closed and latched properly, allowing the oven to function properly. I swabbed out the hole with a q-tip, let it dry for 20 minutes and all is well.
