Question about Honeywell Programmable Thermostat Heater

A/C won't kick on w/ Honeywell RTH230B The thermostat went out and needed the batteries changed. I changed the batteries but now the AC unit will not respond or switch on even after waiting the 5 or so minutes for compressor safety. I have tried to reset it several times over a period of a couple hours but still no luck. The unit has worked fine and the AC was running earlier today without any issues.

none of those suggestions worked thanks though for your help

  • galwaychase Aug 21, 2010

this was attempted last night but even in 'Manual' mode the thermostat is not triggering the AC to turn on, the fan in the furnace will work when that function is turned to 'On' but will not run the fan when in 'Auto'

thanks apparently it was easier than that the 'new' batteries I used apparently weren't all that new and once again shutting everything down and removing the batteries for 1/2 hour then reinstalling fresh batteries that were actually fresh set everything right again thanks for you help

Hi,
Okay it seems that for some reason the battery change scrambled the brain of the t-stat... that happens...
To fix it you will now have to go into the "Installer Menu" and reset the paramenters of the t-stat.
If you have the Installe brochure then you can look in there and then set the tistat for "heat/cool" and also to "auto fan" and then to "auto changeover" These should get you back to cooling again...
No big problem, just a small programming issue...be patient and if you do not have you book don't worry... you can look it up here...this tip tells you where and how to find any of the Honeywell t-stat manuals.

My solution is: Never buy this **** again. I follow this rule myself. I'm sick and tired of hearing why programmable is so far superior to the old mercury switch. Well, never had to re-program that one. Off-On / Heat-Cool and preferred temp. Leaving? Turn it off. Returning? Turn it on. Brilliant! No manuals, high-priced repair people or computer science degree needed. Gadgetry is not always better.

Please check if the temp setting on the panel is lower than the existing temperature in your room. If so push up the settting to give more cooling. Put the AC off for some 30 minutes , reset and put it on again., remove the battery , keep aside, if leaked clean well.
If there is no result you will need to check if the main unit is detecting the signals, manually try to see if the compressor relay works. Checking on the unit can determine if there is a controller failure, relay failure although this cant be the case as the unit worked.
So we shall point to the fault in the thermostat section, preset the program once again, if the thermostat is OK , the connections are OK, then it must work but give time.
Hope my tip works.

Cool air not working with honeywell Model # RTH230B

Do you have a heat pump? If so, not compatible. What i did was move the jumper on the thermostat (RH RE). This is on the inside of the thermostat - NOT the red jumper!!! and got the AC working (the heat had already worked during the winter, problem only became apparent when I needed to use AC). I may have to change the jumper again when the season changes...not sure yet.
