Our air conditioner worked fine for us nearly all this summer but the light was on telling us to check the filter but we can't find a filter. We were hoping to replace or clean the filter before we called in a technition.

some units my have the power save key or a button with a plug icon on it this will make it sort of "sleep" while it waits for the temp to get past a temp point before it turns its self on or off (sleep)
There is a relay in the outside unit. Check for 24 volts a/c at the two wires coming from the furnace. also there may be a mouse nest in the control comartment where the relay is and they tend to chew up wiring insulation and sometimes wires get disconnected .
If you feel cool air near blower, you have to service your unit completely. Because it's giving cool but not removing heat from room due to coil and air filter blocking. Helpful?
Get to your funace and check inspection window on furnace. Small hole covered by glass. Check how many time the light blinks inside and that will tell you the problem. sound to be in heat modenow. If you are after the cool mode, then if you have a cool setting and a heat temp setting, Lower the heat to almost off and set the cool setting to 74 degrees. See if the outside coils get warm. Make sure you are off manualo and n auto. If it runs, give it some time and the tenp of the outside coil will rise and the inside will get cold. Food Luck
If you can't change the settings manually, then the control pad is bad. If you can and the remote won't change the temp or mode then the remote is bad and will need to be replaced.
