On my PCG-FX-120 sony vaio, the power light and drive momentarily comes on and will do that as many times as the power button is pressed but that's all it does. Prior to this it was on and running and just died and has not come on since. Any suggestions is appreciated.

I'd say it's time to do a close inspection of the hard drive connector/adapter, especially if it has any components mounted on it. If you can't see a problem you can fix like a short between two terminals, and you can't get another one, get an external USB drive (preferably the largest flash memory stick you can obtain) and set it up as a Linux bootable volume and use that to run your computer. You will probably have to set the BIOS to boot from a USB volume first.
Start by installing this program CCLEANER found here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ Run the cleaner, registry delete the results. Go to TOOLS> STARTUP disable all programs you do not need to start at windows startup. Next, Install MALWAREBYTES found here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/ Run a FULL scan , delete any results. NEXT, open IE9 in the top right corner of the page is a "gear" icon, left click>Manage add-ons, Toolbars and extentions, disable any TOOLBARS and the add-ons you do not need, move down to Search Providers, delete ones you do not use. Toolbars and extra search engines are killers on IE speed. Trim the weight to speed up you web broswer. The more that added to your broswer the slower it's go to be. Same with your laptop at startup.
Its possible that you already have a bad hard drive. It may have crashed. Your system will not boot without the hard drive running. The computer will keep on trying to look for the Hard drive that's probably why it looks like its doing nothing. Bring your machine to sony and have them fix it. If you know how to open up your Vaio, try to check the Hard drive connection and see it its loose, if its not loose. its time to replace the hard drive.
IS THIS WITH BOTH AC CORD AND BATTERY
you probably need a power supply
before you run out and buy one start and press f8 then start in safemode see if the same thing happens
also make sure your AC adapter is connecting with internal connection the internal connection can become loose or bent from constant plugging and unplugging
