Question about Toro Lawn Mower With Toro Power Tools

Open Question

Craftsman Eager 1 carburetor diagram. Does not look like a Briggs or Tecumseh carburetor. Can it be a Kohler. Will run for a couple of seconds when I spray gas into the air passage. How do I clean the carburetor?

SOURCE: Snowthrower. Won't even fire. Can I just clean carburetor?

See my tip on diagnosing small engines. It works for 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines.
It is best not to use starter fluid. Aerosol carb cleaner is what I use.

SOURCE: I have a Toro model 20007 recycler with a 6.5HP Tecumseh engine

This almost sounds like a pinhole in the primer bulb but I need to know if you did the following. Did you remove the jet and venturi tube in the bottom of the carb. and clean the BRASS orifice hole and BRASS tube holes? If you did not then It will act just like the symptoms you described. Also check to see if your float bowl nut has holes in the side of it. IF it does then make sure the hole(s) are clean. Also make sure the fuel selector is all the way ON. Adittionally if the carb to block mating gasket is torn or not secure it will also perform as you stated.

Lastly the open the fuel air mixture screw on the side of the carb about 1/8th turn and see if the performance changes.

If the problem persists ....
This is dangerous due to the risk of fire but....

If you have any carb cleaner you can give it a quick shot in the nmating areas just after you start it before it gets hot to see if it speeds up. If it does, you have a vacuum leak. It is better to use an unlit propane torch if you have one.

Thanks for using FixYa,

P.s. If the problem does persist I will need your complete engine number to proceed in troubleshooting.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the info. I ordered a rebuild kit for the carburetor so i can replace the gaskets. And i ordered a new primer bulb. The engine is a Tecumseh LV195EA-362003B 6.5 hp engine on a Toro model 20007 recycler mower. Do I need to remove the welch plugs?"

I recently bought a Craftsman GT 5000 model number 917-276011. The serial number is 081503B002444. What year was this tractor made? I would appreciate any input.

Usually the quickest way to date lawn tractors is to look for the date code (Briggs and Stratton) or the D.O.M. (Tecumseh) for example. So on a Briggs engine there is a long three part series of numbers: model; type; and code. The code is the date code and the first two digits are the last two digits of the year made, the next two are the two digit month, followed by the next two which are the two digits for the day. This is how I get a decent idea of the age of a mower, assuming the original engine is on the machine of course. If you have a Tecumseh engine, it has a four digit DOM before 2004 and a five digit from 2004 on. The first digit of the four digit version is the last digit of the year. From 2004 on with the five digit the first two digits represent the last two digits of the year. Either way with Tecumseh engines the last three digits would be the day of the year. For example a Tecumseh engine 05222 would have been made on August 10, 2005. If you have a Kohler, I am not sure about that one as I have not had to date one yet, but the vast majority of the engines I deal with for Craftsman, including my own are Briggs and Stratton.

I hope you find this helpful.

I think that model may use the Tecumseh engine and carburetor application. Here is a diagram of what your machine (carb/choke and governor) should look like.

I don't know what oil type to use for a Tecumseh 8.0 hp engine

Tecumseh recommended straight 30 weight (30w) for summer use. You can use 10w30 also.
5w30 for winter use.
Use a heavy duty oil because air cooled engines run hotter than you car engine. A brand like Briggs&Stratton, Craftsman, Kohler.
I have used full synthetic like Mobil One with great success also.
If you have any other questions, please ask!
