Hey sinn - First thing to do is get into the BIOS and set it to boot from the CD. When your system boots there is a quick message like press F2 or Delete to enter setup. Go to the boot sequence and make sure the cd is listed to boot before your hard drive. Make sure your Windows cd in the cd drive. If it boots, then select a new install. Then delete all the partitions on the hard drive (C:)and create a new one. Then select it to install the OS on. Sounds complicated, but take your time and read every screen carefully before you press "Enter".

If you can't get it to boot, then go to http://bootdisk.com and download a boot diskette image. Any Windows 9X will do, just make sure it has CD support included. Create the diskette(s), change to the CD drive and run setup.
If this solves your problem PLEASE rate this as fixed. If not, please don't rate yet just add a comment letting me know you need more help and I'll be glad to assist you. Let me know what happens. Thanks.

Jeff

My windows OS is not genuine. How can I change my operating system without using CD? or free download

Unfortunately if you don't have your CD key, there's no way you can make your Windows XP genuine, without purchasing a new one or installing a valid copy of windows. However, there are operating systems out there that are free to use. Linux is a great operation system capable of nearly anything. Depending on what you are using your PC for now it may be an easy and great switch. Pinguy OS is a variety of Linux designed to be easy to use for any user. All you need to do is download it and install it to a disk. Pop in the disk and restart your computer to install. If you prefer windows, now is a great time to get a genuine copy of Windows XP for a cheaper price now that Windows 7 is available, or you might even consider making the change to Windows 7. It's really a great OS! Hope this was helpful. Here is a link to Pinguy OS: www.pinguyos.com

My system had linux and windows XP. TO remove linus OS i used active kill disk software and removed the linux partitions. Now the system is not bootingup and shows the GRUB -error 17. I even tried for...

Educated Guess:

I am guessing that your GRUB menu had both entries for Windows and Linux, and you would select the OS you wanted to boot from when GRUB came up.

Unfortunately, when you removed the Linux partitions you also removed the GRUB configuration files that specified where the Windows Partition is. I looked up "active kill" and I can assume there is no way anything will be revered from the Linux Partitions.

You might try the recovery console from mode from the Windows Bootable.

There is no way for me to really tell how trashed your disk is.Some of these commands may (or may not) be able to help you out (commands only available from the recovery console).

map
fixboot
fixmbr

Direct link to map command, which has links to other commands.

Have a windows xp home edition, want to install windows xp professional pc wont let me install as 2nd OS,explain please

On the same machine, Windows does not tolerate second OS. Ont the other hand you can install any number of OS' if it is a Linux machine. The trick is to install Windows first and then install Linux etc. The Linux boot manager will tolerate Windows and others and incorporate then with itself. But vice versa is not possible.

How to Install both XP and Linux?

Hi,
I would install XP 1st then Open suse or Ubuntu. When you install either of these linux OS's ensure you install to another partition other than the windows one. Both installation routines will allow you to format the drive to the linux ext2 format and automatically install a boot manager (usually GRUB) which will allow you to select the OS you wish to boot.
