Question about Brother HL 2700CN Laser Printer
The comments by Chrismcd did not apply in my case. The printer was happily producing copies, then stopped with the Illegal Toner message. There was some toner spillage inside the machine but after cleaning it and installing known-good cartridges it still shows the same message.

The HL2700CN is a Tally machine rebadged by a number of manufacturers. Each has it's own unique 'plug' on the back left side of the cartridge as you look at it in the machine. Check that the plug is the right shape and if necessary fit the one from your empty 'brother' cartridge.
I have only ever had the 'illegal toner' message when I put in a Lexmark cartridge by mistake - swapping plugs solved it.
'Brother' machines seem to run at a different temperature than other Tally clones - so there may be a deeper problem with the toner that you used. In my case it simply failed to fuse to the paper and I had to get another cartridge. Check for deposits on the OPC belt and fuser rollers.
