Question about Xantrex Technology Xantrex 458 10 12 Freedom 1,000 Watt Inverter/Charger

1 Answer

My inverter/charger quit working the lights that used to come on does not come on. There is no voltage at the terminals, the inverter inside the Coach doesn't come on. I hook the system to AC voltage, and i will get a very big shock when i touch the metal of the Coach and a ground outside. The green charge light inside housed under the bed blinks about 1 time per minute. The Batteries check ok and i can't start the Coach or Generator, please advise, thanks. Richard

Hi. Usually when that charge light starts to blink, That will signal a Charger overload situation. This means that the battery voltage is too low to charge. This will damage the unit. I see that you have stated that the batteries are ok. If this is the case, turn off all DC loads and restart the charger. If it dose not start with all DC loads off, Disconnect the remote control panel for 1 minute. Verify that the batteries are above 10 VDC's. Next, disconnect the incoming AC power form the unit and remove the positive battery lead for 1 minute. After the one minute, reconnect all device and leads and start the unit. Of the problem persist, you will have then confirmed that there is indeed main component failure. Possible Internal merging circuitry(welded), due to over current or massive short.

Ok, I have some bad news Richard. The units internal components are fused and welded, due to the over charged state that was present. That induced a very heated situation that caused the unit to fail. The strongest indication of this type of damage will be the shock or surge that you experience when you introduce the AC voltage to the unit. Unfortunately, the unit will need to be rebuilt. If it is under some type of warranty, this would be a great time to exercise that package. The internal capacitor(s) and transformer are toast. The unit is very unstable at this point. It will not be able to preform its duties in this state.

Ok, Click here to be directed to a RV Supply Warehouse. The link is already bookmarked to the appropriate page so that you may purchase as quickly as possible. You can select your amperage on the right side of the picture of the inverter. The 10 Amp version will start at $974.99 with free shipping. You can choose up to 30 Amps, if needed.

If for any reason you prefer more than 30 amps, I have located a 50 amp version that is $800.00. The shipping on that unit may not be free.

    Hi localwonder,
I have ordered the xantrex 458 for my unit.
Could you tell me if the 458 burning up like it did will cause me to not be able to start my engine and generator. That question is in the first question,
    Richard

  • Michael Masters
    Michael Masters Aug 23, 2010

HI. If the unit was directly attached to the engine for starting purposes, the answer is yes. Now; if your engine starting mechanism is separated from the actual inverter/charging assembly(458), this will not be the cause of engine failure or engine start issues.

  • richardba359 Aug 23, 2010

I suppose it will hold for the generator, thanks

use a voltmeter and measure the voltage AT THE INVERTER'S Battery terminals and see if its over 11 volts. You could have a loose connection or a bad cable creating a voltage loss.

How do i convert my 1.2kw solar inverter on my roof so i can run my home on stored energy ?

Solar panels produce DC voltage.
some solar panels have the inverter integrated into each solar panel.
I would suggest contacting a local solar panel supplier and asking them if they could add a Battery Charging System to the Solar panels you use. An then what sort of inverter to add to the bank of batteries.
An inverter converts DC voltage to AC voltage to use in the grid.
The AC voltages and DC voltages involved have the possiblity to kill if you much around with electricity.

When driving my Why would my s10 just quit

sounds like a loose power connection or bad wiring in the engine compartment. Check battery cables and ground connections at both ends of wires and cables first. If the problem remains, test equipment and a wiring diagram would come in handy.

My vector vec157 will not charge on 120 volt. It works on 12 volt

If you light is charging when you use the 12v automotive charger but not when you use your AC power transformer, my thought is that you might have a problem with your AC charger, not with the light itself. I have AC/DC transformers from the 1970s that still work fine, but I have had numerous modern AC/DC transformers burn out on me in recent years.

One easy test is to use a multimeter to measure the output voltage of your wall charger. Place one test lead on each of the charging terminals (i.e., one inside the barrel and one outside the barrel, if you have a standard coaxial charging port) and check the DC reading. If it's zero--or anything less than 12 volts, actually--the charger isn't working correctly. The problem may be a torn or cut wire or something actually inside the transformer.

Replacement chargers can be found at Radio Shack and other stores. You may also be able to score a cheap replacement at a "dollar plus" store or even at a second-hand shop. Make sure that the terminal polarity is correct on your replacement charger or else you'll fry the batteries in your light.

Good luck!

I have the SSC-1500A battery charger and the yellow light keeps flashing. The yellow light is the charging light.not sure why

This unit will assume a battery voltage less than 1.5 volts means the battery is sulfated. The flashing yellow light means it has gone into 'desulfate' pulse mode using pulses of high voltage to try and convert the lead sulfate back into sulfuric acid and lead plating. It will do this for about 8 hours on the charger I have. If the voltage has not raised to a level that can can accept a normal charge it will abort the pulse mode and stop trying to charge it. You will need to unplug and replug in the charger to try again. Always check the temperature of the battery while charging it and especially if the charger is in pulse mode. Stop charging if the battery is hot. *always wear safety gear*

Inverting side working fine but charger is not

I had a similar problem at work yesterday.when your charger switches of it assumes that the battery is fully charged, while it is not.this is the solution , switch on you inverter machine and allow it to run, while it is running use a direct current "dc" multi meter a test the voltages of the batteries any one that drops like 3 volts below the normal voltage is bad. Change it and you will notice that the problem will stop. Note that when a battery is bad it takes little time to get it charged than when it is in a good condition .

Xantrex Inverter/Charger has no AC output

HI

Checking AC Output
1. After the battery voltage and connections have been checked, disconnect the inverter.s AC output wires from
the power distribution system and connect a light to the AC output of the inverter/charger.
2. Disconnect the remote panel to eliminate it as a possible problem.
3. Turn the inverter ON using the power switch on the front panel of the inverter. The 100-watt light should
illuminate. Measure the voltage at the AC output wires using the multimeter. The reading should be 114.126
VAC or approximately 230 VAC if the unit is an international model. If the light does not illuminate, there is
a problem with the inverter. Contact Xantrex technical support.

I have a black and decker inverter type 1 400

First, you should be aware that the exact inverter is available for under 40 dollars all over the US. Your model is sold under several names - check out http://search.harborfreight.com/cpisearch/web/search.do?keyword=inverter .

I suspect that your INPUT power level is not adequate for the inverter to put out the 200W that the 150W charger needs. If you have low current and low voltage - then the inverter can only put out a proportionally smaller AC wattage level. You may also have a faulty voltage sensor....at the input. Once the inverter sees a low level (even momentarily), it alarms and shuts down the output until the unit is reset (turned off/back on)

Inverter output voltage (eg. 96 volts) not if this is an issue

96 volts is low. 106 volts is low. You need to be about 110 to 120 volts optimum. How is your battery input? This is crucial for the inverter to output correctly. If it needs 24 volts DC in Then make sure it's 24 volts. 48 volts means 48 volts. Check the battery voltage and compare to inverter input requirements first.

It's quite possible that you are charging your batteries with a "smart charger." The problem with some smart chargers is that when a battery is drained below a certain voltage, the charger assumes the battery is a lost cause and stops trying to charge it. You may have to get a cheap "dumb" charger to bring the batteries up to a reasonable voltage before turning things back over to the smart charger.
