Yes it can. There is a thick WHITE colored wire, that needs to power up as a true ignition wire or it will not activate the electrical portion of your transmission. This is a common known problem especially with dealing with remote starters in these vehicles.

I have a 1999 chev 1500 4x4 will not shift any higher than 2nd gear. when it tries to shift it's like it goes int nutreal and you have to manuely down shift to make go back into gear


The problem could be related to service bulletin. It refers to check for loss of power to the transmission shift solenoids. This defaults the transmission to second gear. The most likely cause of this condition may be a loss of voltage to the transmission solenoid power supply circuit. This condition may also be the result of an incorrect installation of an aftermarket electronic device such as a remote starter or alarm system. If the vehicle is equipped with an aftermarket electronic device, and the DTCs are being set when the device is being used, verify that the appropriate fuse is being supplied battery voltage during operation. If voltage is not present at this fuse, these DTCs will be set due to lack of voltage at the solenoids. This condition is most likely to occur with an incorrectly installed remote starting system. With the ignition switch in the run position, test for battery voltage at the circuit fuse in the transmission solenoid power supply circuit. If battery voltage is present at the fuse, inspect the ignition voltage circuit between the fuse and the transmission for possible opens, else, test for continuity between the fuse and the ignition switch. If NO continuity is between the fuse and the ignition switch, repair the open in that circuit. If you have continuity between the fuse and the ignition switch, the most likely cause is the ignition switch. Replace the ignition switch. Where is the overdrive switch on the transmission of a 1999 Ford Contour


This is called the "Transmission Range Sensor", or sometimes the "Neutral Safety Switch." It is located on top of the transmission, between the engine and the battery. If it is defective, it can cause a number of problems, including erratic down-shifting out of, and then back in to, overdrive.

If you decide to change this switch, follow this procedure. Set the parking brake and block the wheels to prevent the car from moving. Turn the ignition switch to "On" (don't start the engine), then put the shifter in neutral. Turn the ignition off, then disconnect and remove the battery. Remove the rubber boot between the air intake box and the throttle body. Disconnect the wiring harness from the switch, remove the two 8mm bolts that hold it in, then pull the switch straight up and out. Take note of how it engages the shaft inside the transmission.

Put the new switch in, leaving the bolts loose. (Make sure the two lines on the switch line up with each other. This sets it to the neutral position.) Tighten the bolts, and put everything else back together. Hopefully, this will fix your problem.

Transmission is not shifting but trans is good, computer is good too


Wow! That sounds like a really expensive way to diagnose the problem! YES, a bad ignition switch can can cause your transmission to not shift correctly. If the problem had been properly diagnosed, you would have known this LONG before replacing the computer and the transmission if this was the cause. You say you "checked [your] wires" and that "all [are] good", but apparently, this is not the case. If the wires had been PROPERLY checked, you would know if you have the correct voltage at the transmission solenoids from the ignition switch and it would be unnecessary for you to ask this question.

I have had a lot of problems with the Vectra 2005, engine 3.2. The codes that it shows are P0743, toque converter clutch. Also P1700 and U2103. In may we repaired the transmission, it works for 2...


find a mechanic isnt just "taking" your money. ok when u had the trans replaced did they put a new torque converter in? if they didnt install a new converter this very well may the cause of your problem

1994 Chevrolet G30 transmission problem


Its most likely the brake light switch, also connected to the steering column. It controls the Torque Converter Clutch, and when it is out of adjustment, it will not engage upper gears properly...The computer gets confussed and tries to protect the transmission.
